The bottom of the roof line should be just above the top of the door.

A beautiful home and I have to agree with dailypainter. The copper roof is too high, looks too close to the window. Perhaps 6-8" lower.

did you all do some reconstruction on the front of the house as well because those two houses are completely different houses. there are major structural angles which have changed between the before and after houses, not to mention the story addition on the right before house.

To me, the copper is hung just right.

A great start. The door needs to be meatier. The flanking pots are too small-- perhaps a pair of spiral yew or topiary cedars. Window boxes under windows would add dimension and weight to the facade. Perhaps a larger door or more architectural detail around the front door. Boxwood edges look great with this architectural style, and small scale trees flanking front walkway would add entrance drama. Black and white is always classy and timeless, and white begonias or impatiens would be great. Then add some pink or red to the palette. Copper is beautiful , but the entrance canopy also is undersized-- works with the door but skimpy door is disproportionate . I realize my comments are budget breakers though.

Yes, it's more tidy and the new copper over the doorway is lovely, but I would really liked to have seen something more "nature friendly" and interesting for the gardens. The design could still be a bit formal while having a greater diversity of plant species, less lawn, deeper beds with with more planted layers and maybe a natural looking island bed by the sidewalk/road to create privacy and break up lawn. This is the typical suburban landscape Americans have held onto for 60 years. In my industry we refer to it as "bearding a house". I prefer nestling a house into the landscape while adding wildlife benefits. Sorry to be negative, but it's not my cuppa landscaping tea.

Less lawn, more color and visual interest:

i like the copper roof(i hope they are fine with the colour it's gonna get after being rained on), but i don't like all the existing plants to be gone. the owners clearly didn't maintain the shrubs and lawn, now the entrance is bare and chances are the new plants will be neglected too. not a fan of this project, sorry.

How did you kill the ivy? I am overrun with it and Roundup doesn't touch it.

Lori, we had to pull it off the house and dig out the roots completely. You need to dig out the main roots or it will come back.

I love the look of the the copper over the door, but I doubt it provides any protection and the gutters and downspouts will need maintenance or they can turn an ugly brown. I suspect the shrubbery that was planted next to the house will have to be kept pruned back on a regular basis, or will have to be removed in a few years..... I am not meaning to be negative, I just am big on designs that will be functional and look great in 10-20 years as well as today.....

babyduck78, yes copper will not look new after a while.All the existing plants were outdated junipers and large evergreens, it was too wild.The new plants that went in are boxwood evergreens that need minimal trimming and grow slow. There are also knockout roses across the front that will bloom all summer and need minimal feeding and pruning. Astilbe,grasses and hydrangeas are also part of the landscaping. Once everything matures it will look a little fuller. Our company will do the maintenance for these gardens and keep up the new plants. Thank you for your comment.

The picture does not show it but everything planted next to the house is boxwood evergreens that will grow slow and need minimal trimming in the next five years.

The house is much neater...however the front door needs some type of framing or trim around it or portico with columns... front lights need to be bigger...the entrance needs to be more pronounced. The landscaping is pretty...I would've put a small tree on the end of the house opposite the driveway to give some different height and interest to the landscaping.

Clearly, a huge improvement and probably a work still in progress. The constructive criticism just sounds like criticism.

I think this is a beautiful job and a huge improvement. The copper does not seem too high to me, it simply needs to be framed on the sides with some sort of structural element to close in the gap. Not actual columns, perhaps just wide fluted wood mouldings on either side of the doorway to frame the door. The lights would attach to the mouldings. Decorative trim (perhaps dentil trim) on top of the door to bulk it up that goes up to the copper awning. I am describing my own house here, so I know that this looks very very nice on an older house.

Copper looks really nice but I too think it's a bit high an almost disconnected ? Was it done on purpose to maybe dissuade people from stealing it with copper prices so high?? Just asking

It looks lovely, substantial, and real.

2¢ Worth- The copper is such an outstanding architectural detail (+ investment!) that it seems to demand some complimentary house paint colors to go with it. (Keep in mind that unless the copper has been coated, it will oxidize to brown, then to verdigris green.) The white isn't doing it justice. If painting the whole house is too expensive, consider starting small by painting the window and garage trim for contrast or compliment..

stamps & LPD, I also planted a "small" conifer like those in the after photo to the side of my door years ago. It has definitely grown too large and is enveloping the corner of the house. Can they be trimmed? I thought I would destroy it if I cut back the branches. I think the house looks terrific and also love the look of old copper. We have a wonderful statue of Joan of Arc upon her horse where I live that had a wonderful old patina. Unfortunately it was "restored" and is now a boring brown.

Am I the only one that prefers the first image of the home to the second? The first image shows a home that fits like a glove into the natural environment. The "crazy" vines reminds one of of an charming Old English cottage; they warm up the coolness of a painted brick two-story dwelling. In my opinion, the second image looks ostentatious.......

Alonda it does look like a different house. Your right the angle of that corner is now flattened and at a 90 degree angle an the drive way has a totally different approach angle too? Odd. And no brick in the second shot like in the first one either? Would like more details on exactly what was done? Thank you

Thanks sugarayk. It just seems strange that they say no structure changes were made. I believe the brick was painted white to match the rest of the house..but that angle is just hard to reconcile.

Nice job overall but the outside lighting appears a bit too small. Would have installed larger fixtures thus bringing the porch roof down some and giving the front entrance a little more balance. Also, would have liked to have seen the inside transformation.

I like the updated house but I guess it wasn't practical to keep the slanted driveway. I like the look of the slant better, more unusual. Overall lovely.
