Sofa selection

How do a I decide between a sectional or a sofa and love seat for my living room? Our house is mid century modern and my style is transitional.

I do NOT like sofa and loveseat combos. get a fabulous sofa and two chairs that match (each other, not the sofa). Then, if you have room, a third "odd" chair is great! And no matching coffee/end tables either.

The house in this photo is mid-century modern? The fireplace looks very circa-1940's.

I'm confused. The furniture is Craftsman and the house looks traditional judging from the fireplace design.

I don't care for sectionals, because they don't allow flexible layouts.

I should add that I know that the 1940s were technically around the middle of the century. But MCM? I don't see it.

Oh, ...and one other thing: you really have a stunningly beautiful collection of furniture.

Whatever you want to call your style, none of us is voting for a sofa and loveseat combo, and houssaon and I vote no on sectionals.

This may not be her furniture, it is Mission style. More pictures of the whole room would help. But definitely not a sectional or sofa/loveseat combo. Unfortunately furniture stores try really hard to get us to love them

Just to confirm the house was built in 1955 so it is firmly mid-century.

Guess my stickley mission style furniture is confusing everyone. I already had this furniture in another house and love it. The couch is mission style but not Stickley, plus I don't find mission style couches all that comfortable so want to replace it.

I was recently faced with the same problem. My living room is small & I originally had a couch, loveseat, matching end tables, coffee tables, due to a back problem I added two recliners! Plus a modern cherry fireplace, which in my thoughts is enduring & never goes out of style. I am a person who needs space & comfort so I emptied out the room thinking I would get a sectional but realized I would be right back to my orginal problem of being over stuffed. I elected instead to buy a salsa red (almost auburn) Lazy Boy English genuine leather (Made in the USA) reclining couch & chair keeping my cherry Mission tables which I love. What a huge difference! I now have both comfort & space! If you home was built in the '50's you might check out the fantastic chrome legged furniture. The sofa's I tested were extra comfortable & come in beautiful colors. Good luck!

A regular 3 seat sofa would be my choice for your room. You have some great chairs so you don't need a sectional. Clean lines and any color but brown or beige because you already have so much wood. Enjoy.
