Hardwood floors

We are planning to install our new hardwood floors in a house that was built in the early 1900's. We discovered there's actually 3 layers of wood flooring beneath our feet (not refinishable.) The planks run the same direction from what we can tell. Were just wondering if adding our new floors would be too much weight for the house or if we should take a layer or 2 up? It would be a huge pain but we already got the flooring before knowing this. Help!

The top layer of flooring is only going to be as good as what is underneath it. Get down to the subfloor, which is probably beautiful wide-plank wood, then put your new flooring down on that.

unfortunately this is the sub floor. we can look up from our basement and its this 2 inch wide wood flooring. no wide plank flooring.

Can you take up a layer of subfloor without damaging the others?

What about your doors? Will the new floor be too high for them to close? If so, I'd take up a layer of floor. If not, I'd get a structural engineer in to determine if the house can bear the weight of the new floor on top of the other three.

You might also check your local building codes to see what they say.

I think it only affects one door fortunately. idk it would be a lot of work because its in 4 rooms and covered in glue and who knows what else. we just may have to take it up though. :/
