Backsplash for kitchen

Having trouble deciding what tile to use for backsplash. Don't want it to be a focal point but want a clean look. We wanted to use white subway tile but afraid it might look to stark with the brick floors. The countertop is soapstone. Any ideas?

the kitchen looks great!! I love the idea of a subway tile with the classic shape, but I agree, white may not look right. But there are tons and tons of different varieties of subway tiles. I'd select a crackle off white, that complimented the color of your cabinets. RBC has them in a hand made version... beautiful!!

It is hard to tell in the pictures, are the cabinets an oyster-ish color? Anyway, get something either cream, tan or light gray that is a lighter version of your cabinets.

Or if you wanted, you could go with beadboard and paint it any color you like! It's much more cost effective and versatile. Here's a farmhouse kitchen I did with beadboard backsplash: Farmhouse Kitchen with Beadboard Backsplash

Wow sbaran! What an incredibly charming space. I think any kind of subway tile (except perhaps for the final one with the fish accent in a celadon crackle glaze) will be too slick for your more rustic selections thus far. I'd want it to feel hand crafted...let me see if I can find any possibilities to ponder...

How will you be finishing and caring for the floor? I happen to love it, even if it'll take a little extra work to keep clean. It certainly worked for hundreds of generations before us.

I also like the celadon tile but if you are still uncertain, consider one sheet of back painted glass. It can be any color -- I often recommend the kitchen wall color. You'll get a consistent sheen without the grout joints plus it will allow your cabinetry to become the focal point of the space.

For the floors, we will be grouting and then sealing. Never worked with brick before so it will be interesting to see how it holds up. We did a complete renovation of a 1930's cabin in NC mountains. Hoping to move in by the end of April!

I'm thinking stick with the black theme - black subway tile with dark grout. You already have a lot of contrast in the room between the floor color and the cabinet color.
