Another Before and After

I know lots of you enjoy seeing jades. This one is getting out of hand so I whacked it today. This is the second one of these I've whacked in so many weeks. Once again I have LOTS of cuttings. Last time I had only one taker, so I'm not expecting anything this time. Since I made up 5 good sized pots from the previous cuttings, will be tossing these.

I am looking for starts. I had to move unexpectedly last yr and
wasn't able to take 90% of my plants. Finally in a bigger place do now I
need some plants. Willing to pay postage.

    Love it!

That is such a pretty plant. How did you learn the correct way to prune it? My jades are no where near ready for such radical whacking but I would like to learn the proper way to do it when the time comes.

Howard! I sent you an email. Thanks in advance :D

I just love the trunk on this! A lovely jade. It will look wonderful with all that new growth. I like how there are different layers to this plant, rather than keeping all the leaves to the very top.

Well, I like where you're going with that one. Trouble is, I don't really know what I want to do with mine yet. Only one is mature enough to have a trunk, so I guess I need to just keep looking at older plants I like and try to prune, when the time comes, to that ideal. Thanks for posting pics of your jade. It's very pretty, even with its summer haircut.

bikerdoc... I am just starting to get hooked on collecting jades and it seems like such a shame to let those cuttings go to waste! I'll be sending you an email as well. Thank you for sharing!

It's done... not my best effort but whacked just the same. Some good sized pieces on the ground. Any takers better be quick as they are compost soon enough!

Okay, I have a question. With "Jade Whacking." Does one have to leave a certain percentage of leaves to the size of the plant to help the plant feed itself, or is that unimportant? I've seen some whacking pictures that removed all leaves and some, like this one, that leave quite a few. I was just curious about that.

It depends on what you want with your plant or your goal of your whack. It looks like in this one Howard did, he was just trimming it to maintain it. Leaves are important for energy production because of the chlorophyll they contain, but will grow back. The new leaves often grow back more compact and visually appealing.

Now you can see how large the trunk and branches are. Looks great! I am looking forward to when my plants are this substantial in size. Howard where do you keep these in the winter? Do they stay in a greenhouse?

Erica is correct. Two years ago I trimmed this same jade to almost NO leaves. This year I just wanted to down size a bit as the plant has become too large to bring it back inside comes winter and there were many etiolated growing points that really had to go! By summer's end, you won't even know it was whacked.

    That's great. I hope you'll update it at summer's end. It's a beautiful plant.

Well, here is another one that has gone way past being reasonable. Should have whacked this a few years ago...talk about etiolated gone wild! Now I'm not sure my artful eye is up to the challenge. Suggestions? And who wants the pieces?

This is something unique I have never seen! You can count on me to take some off your hands Howard. I'll send an email.

My non-expert opinion is that it could use some branching in the middle area to fill the body of the plant. Perhaps prune in the midst there and you will soon have a number of new branches. Again, my non-expert opinion. Perhaps the Jade experts will chime in soon. Happy Memorial Day!

Can foresee some cutting and thinks you can trust your hand and cutters on that, Any good with wiring some branches into shape ?

Coolilceball please start your own thread.

    Thanks Nomen...never wired anything so????

Was bored, so I've taken matters into my own hand and here we are!

It is a beautiful plant. It does look like a good candidate for wiring. The secondary branches could be pulled down to curve more like an L shape if you wanted a fuller look.

    Howard, Thanks so much!

I've just received all your cuttings and they are looking fabulous!

Gonna sit them out for a few more days and stuffing them in a tray of girtty mix.

    I'm so excited!

I've potted up some of Howard's jade cuttings in some gritty mix. I'm amazed at the different shapes of the leaves that came from the same plant.
