White subway tiles seem the way to go, paint colour a soft green grey, floors in the tile like pic, those the floors you have would fit. Love a soft green with Timber

I would choose a marmoleum floor. very resiliant & stylish. I agree w/ subway tile. Install under cabinet LED lighting on a dimmer.

A cork floor in the tone of your cabinets or deeper would be a nice way to handle the elements you have . . but they do sell your top stone in 12 x 12 tile that you could use on the floor. I'm not a fan of tile floors in a kitchen but many people love them . . . I'd look for a creamy ceramic that had some imperfections / looked handcrafted in a unique shape here - maybe morrocan lantern in a soft butter tone .. you could head more contemporary with a pale grey glass subway tile, or a cream and gray concrete tile with a big sort of arts and crafts pattern but with modern tonal colors . . that would be fresh but classic ..

Wall wise, unless you want to do something dramatic, warm and deep like a terracotta to play off the maple tones of the wood . . you basically are looking at caramel, cream and gray . . something between caramel and cream would be my suggestion . .

test a neutral with a caramel undertone .. maybe bm blond wood or bm moccasin . . maybe a dark white like maritime white, particularly if you use a pattern tile ..

If you did something deep gray (porcelain stacked bricks? in a matte stone finish?_ on the backsplash, light gray on the walls (bm moonshine?) then you need a warm light floor but you might do marmoleum . . not a bad choice . . blond washed vinyl wood plank if the rest of the house has no wood yet .. some ideas for you to ponder . .

consider using blackboard paint on the structural column (face and two sides return) that divides the cabinets and putting a stencil at top / making a standing list there . .

I can't see much of your current floor in the pic - is it brown tile? If so, I'm thinking you'll need a lighter floor with cooler tones, to complement that granite. I agree with a simple white backsplash, so you don't add too much pattern. But as always, the floor and wall colors you choose for the kitchen should flow well into adjacent rooms. Since I can't see those spaces, I just have to give you an isolated guess. Depending on which hue best blends with your home's color scheme overall, you might look at warm grays like SW 7043 Worldly Gray or a slightly purple-gray like the strip with 6003 Essential Gray. Ben Moore Cement Gray (or a nearby color) is another good purple gray. I'm not sure I see green in your counter, but all monitors are different. If there is, also look at SW Austere Gray.

Subway tile might be trendy but it's stark and cold looking so it would compete with the warmth of your cabinets. I would choose a tile with varying shades of the first or second most predominant counter color. The interest can come from varying the sizes of the tiles used rather than trying to match tiles that have a large variation in colors.

Actually subway tile is wonderful because it isn't trendy at all. It's the most timeless look you can go for, and that's why it's become so popular. It also comes in many colours/shades/textures so you're best to go to a good tile supplier and bring home samples to audition in your room. It can be anything from smooth white and perfectly square and flat through to deep colours with pitting and slightly irregular edges to look like ageing. I agree that a classic look with this kitchen would be best but perhaps a creamier white would work better than a stark white. This is why samples would be really helpful. It can be laid horizontally or vertically in a brick pattern or stacked and you can emphasize the grout lines with darker grout if you like. Lots of details to consider when you're planning out a backsplash!

Subway tile was the norm for 1950s and 60s public restrooms, train stations, school bathrooms, and institutions. Makes me cringe when I see it in a home. But there's no doubt it's popular right now. Maybe it will grow on me.

Here's the newfangled stuff I was trying to reference - a creamier white / pale yellow coupled with gray in a tile like this is what i thought might be fresh and wonderful - definitely stay away from bright whites

    Hi

A few of my suggestions are :

    Backsplash - 3 ideas :
    1. get a sample of a brick paver. They look gorgeous for backslashes and for floors with your countertop.

    2. If that's too Southern for you I think the white or off white subway tikes would be safe.

    3. If your budget allows a nice 4x4 ogee tile would be nice

    Flooring:

    1. Possibly consider the brick pavers

    2. Hardwood will warm it up. Either go lighter or darker than your cabinets

    Paint:

Get some of the color fans / swatches and hold them up in your home with different lighting. From there get the small sample and paint it on a large WHITE poster board. Check it out that way and it's a sure bet when your painter gets it on your walls.

Dear Mspat: There is a peel & stick metal mosaic tile product from Flextile that I would like to recommend that comes is many different finishes. Based on photo you submitted the color scheme including furnishings appear neutral and therefore the black & brushed metal shown could work very nicely for the following reasons.

    1. Peel & Stick- Does not require mortar and therefore is a DIY project especially now that the kitchen has been completed, personal disruption is minimal. Does not require thin set, mastic, or grout.

    2. Is cost effective ($10-$16 per ft. depending on finish) and because it is essentially a mosaic tile may not require any cuts to install. Can be purchased on Amazon which usually ships in 3-4 days.

    3. Because it is metallic, will have a reflective quality that will add visual interest to an otherwise neutral space.

    4. Will serve to integrate cabinets, table & chairs, SS appliances including counter into a much more cohesive design.

    5. Easily cleans and does not scratch or require cleaning.

These are some of the reasons among others. PS: I also like the copper, as shown on amazon, for your space.

    Yours truly,

    Francisco Torres

I like what I see. I really like your granite and cabinets. I see by your dining set, ceiling light and the wrought iron on the wall, that maybe you're going for that Tuscany feel? May I suggest travertine as a backslash? Most people use it as flooring. I didn't. (It has to be sealed every 5-10 years depending on the type of sealant. Too much work for me!) I used it as my backsplash. It's easy to seal... Just wipe it on. Pick out a color (maybe bisque) that picks up a color in your granite. It would look Beautiful! (My opinion only) You'll know the perfect color when you see it. And, I might add, you can purchase travertine-look outlet covers to make those outlets completely disappear!

Flooring? I like what I can see of your floor. But if it's linoleum, think wood. WHAT??? Wood cabinets AND wood floors? YES! It would warm up the feel of your kitchen and dining area. Make sure it's already distressed... Just in case you're a klutz like me, or have any kids or pets. If something does drop on it and dents or scars it, it won't be easily seen. Let alone the fact you need as many stress-free products as possible!! Just don't make the wood too dark. Dark shows EVERYTHING you Don't want to see when the sun shines on it.

That's all for now. I'm sending Kitchen Glamour Gammas your way... Catch them as they rush by! They'll brighten your day! You've done a Beautiful job! Thx for posting! Terrie

P.S. Keep the current paint. It looks GREAT! The travertine and wood floor is ALL you need! ;)

Try out some of the wood-look ceramic tile for floors......lots to choose from, but a slightly white-washed warm grey/brown in a medium tone would be a nice contrast to your cabinets. Then pick up the grey again in your backsplash using large format subway tiles in a lighter tone than the floors. There are lots of subway tiles that are modern and not "institutional" in their look. Lurton has colored outlets and covers that can make your electrical outlets look great. If you use subway tiles, have the outlets set horizontally.....just looks better. Either match the grout to the tile or choose a warm white that works with you granite. Wall color?.........with a neutral palette you can choose a muted sage green or soft grey-blue or stick with something within your neutral palette and play with lighter or darker. Always paint a large sample in a couple of different areas and live with them as the light changes. You have good granite and cabinets to work with and that is a big plus. Good luck.

There have been numerous Houzz articles that show white subway tiles but with different colored grout, each of which gives a completely different effect. Any possibility of grouping all of those photographs together to get a complete visual in one location?

thank you so much for all your great suggestions after listening to everyone I put together a glass tile for the backsplash in a smoke color. The Bianca Ramno granite.I wanted a dark warm floor so I chose mahogany boardwalk. With a grayish wall please give me your feedback and tell me what you think.

Your gray glass tile has a blue green undertone. I don't think it is great with the grainite elements I'm seeing in your photos, but it will echo the stainless appliances and take you cooler. If you want to head that direction, you might try a muted blue green wall color . . otherwise I think your tile will be the odd cool thing in a room full of warm colors. As a tryout - you might paint a big board with bm beach glass or mt. saint anne and put it at your backsplash and stand back - much less expensive than investing in the tile as a color try out . . I suppose you might go further and paint your walls with the same kind of shade .. bm quiet moments is the off white tone . . http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/beachglass

If you use other muted blue greens in your decor, the caramel tone of your wood means that you can pull this off . . but not as a single element . . you'll want to repeat it somehow.

Your selections look really nice to me. I would like to make another suggestion. I would like to see the backsplash tile continued onto the wall at the top of the cabinets. You could even tile the sides of the niches into which your cabinets are hung, if possible. Then the paint would be on the walls that come up to but do not include your cabinetry area. The front of the little jut-out between the two sections of cabinets would be the wall paint and would make it relate to the rest of the room. If you are interested in this idea, and if this is confusing to you, contact me at ctaylorluce@cogeco.ca and I'll draw up a little sketch for you.

    Hi there
The color combos you put together look nice..but my concern is that it's looking a bit dark in your kitchen. I think that's why people were suggesting the brighter subway tile. And the LED lighting strips. I just changed out a backsplash that was like yours and all the colors in my kitchen went well together...but it was just too dark. So I'm keeping my blue cabinets but I replaced my backsplash with a hexagon tile called Grecian Marble. It's little hexagons of Carrara marble. It's stunningly gorgeous and it matches your granite. I know because I took it to the counter store when I was picking out my new counter. I actually almost got the same one but opted for an even brighter counter (arctic white Quartz) because the color of the granite made our blue wood. cabinets look gloomy, whereas the white brightens them. I like your granite with your wood and really think the hexagons are a good option. They are also reasonable...I got mine at Home Depot! Good luck!
