Removing carpet from stairs, what to replace with?

We are ripping out the carpet on the stairs in a new house. We don't have any extra travertine which is what is the flooring at the base and top of the stairs. I tried going to a tile store with pictures and they said it very hard to do if not impossible...different batches etc.

We are considering hardwood or engineered hardwood but the other rooms on the first floor have the porcelain tile that looks like hardwood. If I do the stairs in hardwood, it would be the 3rd type of flooring on the first floor. I would love to do the stairs in the porcelain tile but it is going to be expensive based on the size of the tiles/stairs and their isn't a bullnose piece so I'll have to put in a metal trim edge which could look odd.

Any advice?
