I would look for a large piece of art that I really loved, place it over the fireplace, and then pull two or three colors out of it and use in throw pillows, are rugs, window treatments, etc...

Despite what many are saying on here, do not hang art on your fireplace. The fireplace IS the art. If you look at similar monolithic stone slab fireplaces on Houzz, you will notice that 99.9% do not have art hanging on them. I would ditch the rug in favor of something lighter in color and with a more refined look. Your room is sleek and the rug is, dare I say, frumpy by comparison.

It is so dark and old. I think you do need to keep it modern .

I love the fireplace, keep it as the focal point, I think art over the fireplace would be way to busy for your lovely home. I would change the lamp shade it blends into the wall color to much, I would remove the mirrors it takes away from the fireplace and put some art or decorations on the wall behind the couch, a lighter colored coffee table with a few less decorations on top, a lighter rug, and a few more colored pillows to your couch. I love the green. Have fun. It's a beautiful home.

Rugs are crazy expensive and very difficult to get right. The grey furniture on a grey rug on a dark floor is a little too much dark. The beautiful furniture would have a wow effect on a light colored rug. You like the greens, so how about a cream rug with a green border?

I admit I hired a professional designer for the first time in my life to choose a rug for me. This was much more practical than buying a couple of the wrong rugs.

And I agree that one large piece on the coffee table would look better, but lighten that up, also. Maybe a bright yellow or pale mint green art glass, bowl or painted box to hold coasters and TV remotes would work. Keep everything else exactly the way it is!

Warm up the walls with a soft coral to stay contemporary - and will look stunning against the marble fireplace, art is a great idea with color - but always chose what you like rather than to match your decor. Art for arts sake! A rug change out is a great idea - with warmer tones to contrast with the cooler ones in the decor. I would stay away from green - and go with complimentary colors but more subdued. Stay away from trendy - short lived and over done - as in accent walls.

Thank you for the reply. It was nice to hear your feedback. I love to decorate and I can tell you do to. My problem is there are so many beautiful things and styles how to decide can be overwhelming. But like you said no wants to spend money on something we are not sure we will like forever or get bored with in a few years. rugs can be a big investment. Maybe you can shop around for a little bit smaller glass coffee table and keep your rug. The glass would open up the space and look bigger and the colors on the table would stand out more and look around for some sort of wall art for the bare wall over couch. and a few pillows for couch. or you could paint the wall behind couch same color as the fireplace wall or paint the wall with the fireplace same color as couch wall. It is a beautiful room.
How about to start with any one of your colors of Green. Grey. Cream or something in a color to match the other wall in a wall art decoration over your couch and a few pillows in some more of your colors. and a gray shade. buy the items at a store that doesn't mind returns. untill you get the pop you're looking for.

Please do not cover that beautiful fireplace. I also like mirrors beside fireplace. Am concerned that art beside it would detract from it even though the piece that Genevieve selected was beautiful. So for me, it's about cleaning off the coffee table. I like the modern aesthetic of Genevieve's picture of one large coloured piece with the orchid on table. Green Pillows are too small on sofa and I would like to see the chair fabric tied into pillows along with your chosen colour. As far as which colour to use? The rainbow is your oyster. Although, I am a colourist at heart, think, in your case, one colour is more modern. The bottom line is, you have a stunning room. Don't over think it, just tweak it.

Forgot, Genevieve had good idea for replacing floor lamp in corner. It would fill up that stair wall without detracting.

Oh! About the art that I had chosen , I didn't intend for you to cover that beautiful marble with it ,I thought that it would look great on another wall in that room , by the way ! it looks like a page from a magazine ,well done :)

Lovely room - my feeling is the rug is not right - very dark - pictures can be deceiving, so maybe it really isn't that dark.

So many comments, I hope you read mine! I also love your room. You have amassed a wonderful mix of textures with the fabrics, mirrors, and shag. These textures make the monochromatic theme work! I actually find the green distracting. The room really reminds me of the very successful Canadian designer, Brian Gluckstein. So I googled his name and "coffee table arrangement" and I found a series of videos that would be perfect for you to watch! If you look at his work you'll see that he adds very subtle colour that doesn't distract. I think this approach would suit you well from what I can gather about your personality from your room. As for my personal opinion, that fireplace IS the focal point... I would NOT cover up one inch of it. Those small green cushions are too poky... re-cover the larger grey ones with your new, subtle colour of choice (deep, smoky aubergine or blue/grey or claret?). Have draperies made in same fabric (I know, expensive). Another simple improvement would be to remove some of the small tables, like the coffee table arrangement... less is more. Take one of the chrome and glass tables from the end of the sofa (useless there) and place it between the two slipper chairs. The round shape of the table would tie into the motif of the upholstery fabric and soften the boxy shape of the chairs (remove the other two tables completely). Lastly, the idea of art is great (both my husband and I are artists!) so if you have another wall that's not profiled in your pics... say opposite the fireplace... that would be a nice opportunity to add more interest and personality! Yeah... I'm done! Not quite... watch the videos... look at Brian's work! You'll love it.

Agree with lindadeniseclaire on this one. I think your room is stunning and you don't need a pop of color. Actually, the green feels forced in the room. You have already created so much interest with all your different textures in a very well-thought out monochromatic room. Your fireplace is already a piece of art...don't cover it up. It's beautiful. Remove the green accents and tweak the items on the coffee table. You've done an amazing job.

Did you photoshop your photos with grayscale or is your room actually monochromatic?

I have a guest bedroom decorated in black and apple green. I've used red in small doses to pop the room, also believe purple will work as well. Really, with a small accessory (or fresh flowers), you could change the accent color seasonally since black and green are neutrals.

What a wealth of suggestions you have to consider. I concur that artwork over the fireplace is an ideal way to add color to this room. Here are 2 suggestions:

Dahlia, 40" diameter, oil with 18k gold and palladium on panel.

Other Crossing, 20" diameter, oil with aluminum and 23k gold on panel.

The green is pulling it all down. Replace the green pillows with orange so it give you some great pop. Orange works well with grey. Use it in at least three places as you have the green (on the table, perhaps a lamp shade or contemporary floor lamp) and think about an abstract painting pulling in the orange as well. If it's still not enough lighten the rug.

You have a nice mix of texture to create visual interest in your room. The emerald green and white give a nice pop of color. The only thing I would change is your area rug. A lighter rug will balance the darker furniture pieces and allow your accent colors to make more of a statement. Beautiful room!

I absolutely love everything about this...the plush rug , all the furniture, the fireplace (or is it a t/v, either way, I love it). it is cozy, inviting and looks so comfortable ♡♡♡♡ 3 thumbs up.

Don't cover the fireplace with art it is beautiful as is. Change the rug to a much lighter color. Bring color in by art (replace the mirrors with art?) I personally do not like the green would go with something brighter to tie into the art I would like orange the best. Change the pillow larger and more. It is a beautiful space already just a few changes. Good luck!

Switch the coffee table to a glass top with perhaps a chrome base and remove some of the accessories from the table. I love the space!

As others have said, the pillows are too small and the table cluttered. Given the amount of dark color, the green is too dark. I suggest replacing the pillows the a lighter, brighter, Granny Smith Apple green. For the art work others have suggested, if cost is an issue, you may be able to find a large, fun print fabric and cover a large artist canvas (or set of 3) to hang over the fireplace.

I think you have created a beautiful space and would only edit OUT the green and let the textures work together. Adding color to a monochromatic room, to me, competes with what you have created. The fireplace is a home run, let it be the focal point. I would edit the coffee table, remove the plant and let the room breathe. If you were adding or replacing anything, I would suggest replacing the pattern chairs with Barcelona chairs, either in black or white. Adding these Mid-Century iconic chairs would take the room to the next level. Excellent work.

I agree with some who have said, try a different area rug. Since it anchors the room which is fairly large I would lighten it up in color and texture. Also pillows should be larger and less on coffee table. The little white framed picture could possibly go in a bedroom?

I think it's an easy fix. Add more green in different shades with lots more pillows, on the chairs as well. The black side table can be painted one of the greens, or even white. Then if it still doesn't look right, think about changing the rug (which is gorgeous, by the way). I think your green is great, but too predicatable which more green things in different shades should cure.

I think you have done a wonderful room, but it does need a few tweaks. I agree with the other comments to keep the room monochromatic, and don't cover up the fp, it is the art. Not every room needs a pop of colour. IMO, this is being over done. I think the tables are dark with the dark rug, and you don't need so many tables. That together with the crowded coffee table makes the look too busy, and you need to streamline. I would love to see a light silver rug with existing tables, or keep rug and change tables to silver. Either way, I think room needs more silver to compliment stone and mirrors.
For inspiration do a search on houzz at the rooms of designer Michael Abrams. He does beautiful monochromatic spaces.

Dear Jandarichuk, I want to expand on my short one word answers to your question that I posted last Monday, during my typical bleary bedtime habit of commenting on the Design Advice column of Houzz. You asked the question of what color to add. It hit me instantly that the right colors to add would be the opposite of the color wheel to your green - orange. And then a few moments later, I had a light bulb moment and decided that Frieda Kahlo's palette was the right direction here, and so I added magenta, and then the somewhat ridiculous idea that you could attain a painting by the master. For fun, I looked that up. The last one sold on record was in 2006 for 5 million. What was I thinking--and how glib of me. Well, the premise was that her color palette of jewel tones fits in beautifully with what you have started in this room.

I am amused by all the people who think you should replace things you already own. I do not agree. I think you have demonstrated a great look and style as a start here. All it needs is more layers. Contrary to most commenters, I do not think it a crime to hang artwork over the fireplace. The beautiful marble pattern will not be compromised simply by adding a layer to it--a layer of a knock-out piece of art. Layered interiors showing complexity and personality are the most exciting and the most interesting. Some of these suggestions make it look too much like a model home. It is your home and should reflect your personality. I love what you have done so far. The mix of greens, textures, and patterns is magnificent. My advice is to keep going with more layers of more colors.

I can't help but notice you haven't commented yourself yet, and people are going nuts over this post. I hope I have given you something useful, addressing the question you asked.

LOL...so many suggestions about CHANGING OUT things you have already stated you love, but not many addressing your question, and that's about adding a POP OF COLOR...LOL... this is MY opinion, and what I do in MY home...perhaps it will help you.....ALL my walls in my home are differing shades of neutrals...I add in "pops" of color in my accessories as my MOOD dictates.....sometimes a pale pink in warmer Summer weather...sometimes a deep amethyst in dead of Winter....all depends on my mood....for YOU, with such dark basic features already in place, I would suggest perhaps a peach, or cantaloupe tone to lighten up the area..or a deep coral color...or maybe you would prefer something in a watermelon pink shade....or even a light lavender.....if the green is really YOUR favorite color, then it needs to be more like a lime green, to really pop out.....start by removing ALL the green presently in the room ( so it doesn't distract from your decision-making ).....then add a couple of pillows in whatever color you THINK you would like.....live with them for a few days....if they don't work, return them and exchange for some in another color....no money lost if they don't work...LOL...once you've found THE perfect color for YOUR mood and liking, then you can begin to hunt for accent pieces in shades of that color....

When trying to make a color decision, I have found it helpful to me to go to a fabric store, check out the colors in what is normally used as a "lining" material, synthetic similar to a silk, as it's cheap and comes in variety of solid colors....I usually get a yard of whatever color I'm interested in, come home and cut it up so I can lay pieces of it on my sofa, a chair, a bed, etc. etc......just so I get an idea of whether I really like that color in my room....after "living with it" for a while, I usually am able to make a decision, since I've seen it in all sorts of lighting, and in MY décor....it's a super-cheap way to see if a color will work or not in YOUR home....good luck with finding your "pop" factor!! Your room is gorgeous!! P.S......less is more....your chairs have a super busy print....so would be better to let them "shine" and remove at least half the items on the coffee table otherwise they are both vying for attention...just my opinion....

You did a great job with this room. I honestly wouldn't change a thing! We love how you managed to get pops of green everywhere, and even managed to get a bit of a green-tone in your rug!

This room looks great -- as if it were designed by a pro -- and I very much like it except I'm not at all fond of that rug (but then I USE my living room and, aside from being too dark and the out of date shag look, it would not be practical for my family living in the country). Before you do anything else to the room, lose the rug and enjoy the wood floors for a time to see if that helps. If you do replace the rug, opt for something not a shag.

Hmmm, going to change my opinion now that I have read the other folks input. I think you should keep everything as is except take out the green, put white pillows on the couch and something large and stunning on the coffee table. Make it monochromatic. Beautiful room.

A second thought:

Though I do like the look of the table, it does take up a lot of room and could be a knee knocker. Also, it ends up close to the heat from the fireplace heat. If you ever decide to start swapping out furniture, you might at least consider swapping it for a smaller table with rounder corners and, maybe, putting some longer legs on this one to repurpose it -- looks like the right size for family board game table.

In the meantime, have you considered adding a thick non-glare glass to the top of the coffee table and adding family photographs or posters or other art beneath it and not so much atop it -- especially the taller stuff.

In addition to my earlier post, I think the pillows on the sofa by the windows should be the same or at least the same amount of pillows on the sofa closest to the stairs

Just add two white pillows to each of the sofas to tie it all together, and reduce some of the things on the table. The room is nice.

Hi, your room is beautiful. Staying with your palette, I would suggest something simple like a white pillow with black accent (below from Arianne Belle) to add the "pop & contrast" on your sofa, replacing the green ones. "White" is always a good accent color to breakup too much overall dark tones in a room, like your white deco objects on your coffee table. Hope this was helpful. Good Luck! Y

I personally like the gold and gray theme. Change rug to a chevron gold and cream, larger pillows in gold tones, and large picture over fireplace in gold, cream, black with just a splash of red. Place round gold metal glass topped table between slipper chairs in smaller proportion than is already there. My two cents.

Pale pink would look great with the green and gray. You get a throw and a few textures pillows to start. You could even paint the wall around the fireplace in a very pale pink (or not).

For me, the room has too much visual movement, with the marble, rug and chair patterns competing. I would layer a cream colored solid square rug under the coffee table, about half the size of the grey rug. This might calm things down, balance the light and dark colors better and eliminate the need for that pop of color. I would also pare down the coffee table accessories and eliminate the small green pillows.

If you feel it still needs that pop of color, try a solid color afghan layered over the back of the sofa.
