Help - sudsing issue

I started a load, put in same amount of powder detergent and borax. Machine stops - suds. I have never seen so many suds, even in a top loader. I did a drain & spin, then did a rinse and spin. Machine stops - suds. Another drain & spin, then rinses and spin. That did it. Started another load using 1/2 the detergent and no borax. Same thing - suds. I haven't changed anything, been using the box of detergent for about a month. Machine is a Kenmore HE5t made by Whirlpool. Any ideas?

Something very strange is going on here...Larsi had the same issue.

Maybe it is in response to the moon's eclipse. After reading Larsi's post I went back and re-rinsed. It is now on the fourth rinse and still sudsy.

I just did a clean cycle this morning... wonder if I'm safe.

Run through a cycle on hot with no soap whatsoever. That should clear things.

After my 170F Hygiene Cycle (clean machine) and 5 deep rinses....sudsing seems back to normal. I've done two loads today, Cotton Sheets at 120F and workout wear at 105F, and the perfect, desired amount of suds!!!

Could be a bad box of detergent. ..I know its not new but maybe something in it that settled down under the top of the powder...or your water chem could have changed changed. Someone here recently used 1/2 tablespoon of Tide /Bleach in a full fill top loader and said they had suds for at least 5 washes, I've been watching the web to see if anyone else complains about that, I can't even imagine that tiny amount causing suds in that much water..but strange things happen sometimes.. lol

There will always be a list of possible causes (change in water/bad box of detergent/over-dosing that finally caught up to homeowner, but . . . you need to get rid of the suds with a minimum of drama, IMO. Been there, done that, experimented based on the wisdom here at the Laundry forum and figured out a trick --->

Try this, to cut your time and water bill. I figured this out a couple years ago and it works for me every time for me:

    1. Remove laundry from washer and set in dryer or on a counter (do not run dryer unless you are worried about wrinkles, then use AIR/Fluff cycle only.

    2. Run a quick/express type cycle on the warmest setting, with NOTHING in the washer --- NO detergent, NO laundry. This flushes out the soap in the residual water that remains in the washer after a cycle finishes, as well as whatever soap is lingering the drum inside where we can't see it.

    3. When that finishes, put your sudsy laundry back in the washing machine, *** and *** .....

    1. ... find something dirty in the same color category and add it to the load, even if it means the clothes you are wearing, or strip a set of sheets off a bed. Whatever you can find. Go next door and borrow some dirty laundry (LOL) but this works. The detergent that is hanging around in your load of laundry needs something to cling to. Adding more dirty laundry means the leftover detergent will cling to the dirt/soils on the newly-added stuff and will leave with the rinses.
    2. Now run a cycle and add absolutely NO detergent. There is plenty already in your wet laundry.
    3. Check the final rinse cycle and watch to see if there are any suds.
    4. If you try this, let us know how it works for you.. Good luck!

That sounds like good advice. I will try it if I have the suds problem again. I think I have it all rinsed out now, but I will run a small load of towels with no detergent to see.

By any chance have any of you with the suds issues used a pretreater? Sometimes we don't think much of a zap or two of a pretreater, but they can kick up the suds.

Come to think of it mama, I used some Shout on DH's white pants. He had some ink stains. Then I did the lingerie load with all the suds! I rarely use Shout.

But that must have been the culprit. Thank you MAMAPINKYMAVEN!

    Lol...yep that will do it..pretreaters can suds a lot.lol

    Unbelievable.

That explains my suds issues too.

    Thank you, Pinky!

Lol thank you, I was having dinner and thinking what could cause all those suds and it hit me, wonder if they used a pretreat, cavimums right some of those suds like crazy.

No pretreaters for me. I cannot explain my 1-2 day suds issue. I did use liquid, but I did so many rinses and powders after. Odd. Oh well, done now. Suds gone!

No pretreaters for me either. I did run a small load of towels and same problem. I ran the clean machine cycle and will run a new load tomorrow,

I have a tl sq and in the winter, late fall, I would have a suds problem. The rinse would have enough to wash and the wash cycle would little or no suds. I was using wisk he will see how it goes this winter using the HE versions of wisk and tide turbo. And I used no pretreaters. Yeah suds can drive one nuts!

Bea, my water is soft 1gr/ gal..I have city water no softener, but in the fall if there's a lot of rain and in the winter after snowfall my water is even softer, which always causes suds issues for me.

kris_zone6 - How long have you had your washing machine? The first year I had our 'he' FL washer, I had all sorts of sudsing issues. It was from a terrible build-up of detergent residue that never got rinsed out of our old water hot TL washer. Towels wore the worst.

Cavimum....this could be true!! I loved, loved my Electrolux units, but the rinses used invisible levels of water. The towels could have had residual detergent, and then I added 2 TBS of soap. Thanks. Good call!!

Cavimum, my washer is 6 years old and I always use an extra rinse, so very doubtful it was residual detergent. I ran a clean machine cycle last night and this morning have washed 2 loads with no problems. I never before have seen suds with this machine so I think I will blame it on the moon. Thanks everyone for your help.
