3-way dimmers

What is the best way to wire 3-way dimmers? In my new house, the electrician used toggle-style switches, with dimmers at one end. For halls, etc., one end had dimming capability while the other did not. So, if the lights were dimmed with the dimmer at one end, the brightness could not be raised from the other end. In my old house, I used "automatic" dimmers where dimming consisted of pressing the switch once or twice and the light increased or decreased automatically; the progress was displayed on the other device, and could be controlled there. However, SWMBO wants the toggle design and I haven't seen any automatic dimmers in that style.
