The best surround sound set up requires a right and left speaker, center speaker, two rear speakers and subwoofer, audio/video receiver and a subwoofer. A budget system would cost anywhere from 600-700 while a high end could cost easily over a grand. To the regular guy who watches football and movies a budget system should be more than adequate. Nowadays there are "small" speakers that deliver "big sound". Google the take classic 5.1, klipsch 500, klipsch 600 and Energy micro. The huge draw back however to this system is that it requires a lot of wiring (which you probably are familiar with).

If money is not an issue but space is I would recommend going with the sound bar option. I am assuming you really want that surround sound feel, I suggest looking into "active sound bar" specifically the "ysp" line from yamaha. Those sound bars pack 20+ speakers into a compact box that beams sound onto the walls to simulate a surround sound. The ysp models are pricey for the starting price is 800. You could buy an older model from eBay for much cheaper. Frankly the ysp models made in 07- are still sooo good.

I suggest the complete 5.1 system if your husband is a movie buff and has really really good ears! Besides that, soundbars make a great option if you want to have a clean audio set up.

Thanks I need all the information I can get this is a deal breaker for me to move forward with our renovation project.
