And hedgehogs are a must. They are kind of the inspiration for new theme.

I would put crib and dresser on opposite walls so she can't climb from 1 to the other.

I second the teepee idea. Instead of an ottoman, I would get mushroom stools that can double as chairs with a white kids table.

First remove the changing table dresser. Its too big an bulky and you have the smaller dresser and a huge closet for storage. Second all your current art work and shelving is hung too high. So whatever you get needs to be much lower. Some should be at kid eye level. Third, if you get new draperiers they should be a little longer length and hung high near ceiling line. Personally i would invest alot in fancy crib bedding and pillows. Its a dated look and not safe. Go for a minimal look with just a cute fitted sheet. Are there doors you can put back on the closet?

So far, I've moved the changing dresser into the closet. I still have the chair, small dresser, and crib in the room. I'll upload pics of the new clean slate shortly, but wanted to ask two questions first...

With the extra space we have now, I'd like to create a play/reading nook on the floor. Something along the lines of this:

To tree or not to tree...

Also, we are wavering on whether we should add a tree to get some height in the back corner that you see as you enter the room. Yay or nay? Which color?

I vote either of the teepees, but not the mushroom house. And no to trees. I'm not a fan of vinyl art in general, so I'm probably not the best person to vote.

I really like the tree idea. My vote is for #2, 3 or 5 of the ones you posted. Colors in the tree and/or teepee might influence your curtain color. Either of the teepees are nice, but I'm not a fan of the mushroom. :)

Love the woodland theme and the hedgehog idea. Yes to the teepee and tree. Kids rooms need to be fun but functional. Obviously her crib needs to be there and whatever dresser stores her clothes needs to be kept somewhere. If she is a big girl then it might make more sense to change her in a quiet area of the floor rather than on the table, but if she is smaller then I would keep the table. Put the changing table in front of the window. The crib on the opposite wall it is now. The little dresser in closet or out of room. Trade the chair you have now for a small table and chair that are kid size so that she may draw/read/have tea parties/etc. Add a small rug and reading nook somewhere as well. Your wall color is great and will work with many other accent colors such as orange, green, brown (what I think as woodland colors). The artwork should go opposite the crib so it won't be pulled down or fall on her. I will find some example of linens and post in a bit again.

These were the colors I was thinking of. This blanket (found on Houzz) is cute. There are also many decal/wall stickons found on Houzz as well when I search under "woodland animals".

I would make the bed the focal point on the wall and move the dresser for sure. You might have room to put the chair with a small colorful round side table on the same wall not sure how much space you have. I love the tree decal bigger than the bed for sure. It would be cute if you got a strand of the battery operated starry lights for the decal so it makes the tree look like its lit up. If not on the tree decal maybe on the tee pee. Pottery Barn had a cute tree decal but I don't see it on their website anymore. You could check ebay.

Thanks everyone! We've completed the first phase of the purge and the rearrange. So much happier with the changing table off the floor. It makes for awesome closet storage. Now I can start adding in some of your awesome ideas. Here's the blank slate I've been playing around with.

Ah! I wish you could tag people like you can on Facebook here. hollywaterfall if you see this, color scheme is one thing that I've been confused about. Is it ok if I just let the blue walls be the backdrop as in the sky and decorate with other colors? Or do I need to find blue to add to the accent pieces. This is close to where I'm thinking, except instead of red accent it would be bright pink, orange or coral.

Everyone goes immediately to pink for girls. I think peach, coral or yellow would look great with that wall color and still be girly. It might also have better staying power as she gets older.

Stephanie-yes! There is a setting that you can "follow" posts so I get a message every time someone comments on here. I think having the blue walls as the background "sky" is fine. Accent in the coral, orange, green, pink, brown...pretty much whatever you like. I don't think there is a wrong answer. It's just that those colors (orange, green, brown, yellow) are what I think of when I think woodland. I like the changing table in the closet also. If you move the chair under the shelves, you have a nice little reading nook maybe and then the tree decal can go where the chair is now. Thanks for the update.

One of my customers wants to update her daughter's room. She wants something pretty and gauzy at the window that she won't have to change as her daughter grows. We are considering pinch pleated sheers in white or offwhite that will just cover the window. It looks like you have a blind for privacy; the sheers will soften the look and are neutral enough that they will look good with whatever theme your daughter chooses as she grows up.

I think the crib under the window would make a great focal point in the room. Curtains cascading to the floor on either side of the crib. I love the hedgie idea. You could cut in felt a big woodland animal mobile or purchase one. Adorable.

The chair doesn't look girly or woodland, so I would remove it. Check with your friends, family and co-workers to see if they know anybody who could hand paint a tree for you...not a "pro" but just a hobbyist who would do it more for fun than for a big price. Hand-painted looks softer than a decal and could be custom designed including animals/birds, etc. of your choice. I love your wall color, and your idea!

Yikes! No crib under the window for safety reasons! I like orgalnizedsarah's hand-painted tree ideas (unless you're renting.) The two little shelves to the left of the window seem really high and floating up to nowhere. I'd move them down remove them altogether. I agree that the fabric of chair doesn't really work. I'd make (or have made) a washable slipcover.

As long as there are no cords that pose a strangulation or choking hazard I think it is fine to put a crib or bed under a window. Of course the window must have safety locks. Everything in a babies room must be super secure, of course.

All great ideas! Definitely slipcover the chair. The one suggestion I would add is to paint the dresser(s) white or, possibly, one of your favorite accent colors. Don't listen to people who say not to paint wood furniture. Decorating for girls is the BEST! When my girls were little, I painted all the furniture in our small apartment white and let my 6 year old pick out the fabric for seat upholstery and slipcovers. She chose a pink leopard print and the result was brilliant. Everyone who walked into our home broke into a smile, including me. YOLO :-)

If you need the dresser you may want to put it in the closet to save floor space .

move the crib to the opposite wall. I love the tree Idea. You can put critters in the tree as well as a family tree theme. I would go brown with the tree to warm up the color scheme. Brown shutters would be cute as well.

I love your idea for a feminine woodland theme! A teepee would be adorable and fun to play in now that you have more space in the room.

For the windows, I would suggest a cellular shade. They come in light filtering, or blackout depending on you and your little one's preference.

Coming in late to the conversation but how can we be talking about a child's room with a hedgehog/woodland theme and not mention Beatrix Potter's amazing Mrs. Tiggywinkle or any of her other lovely woodland creatures?

My daughter did a woodland theme for my grandson's room years ago. I think he was 4 years old. We made a cabin out of landscaping timbers that fit a crib mattress. (we did a LOT of research to insure they didn't have any chemicals or toxicity). A crib mattress is large enough for a child for quite a few years, and because it didn't look like a "baby bed" he was perfectly fine with it. There was a window and a door opening in the cabin for him to go in and out and for extra light. Under the crib mattress was toy storage and a great hiding place for playtime. The roof was shingled with old wood shakes taken off an apartment building nearby when they re-roofed the place. The roof was hinged, so provided extra storage in the "attic". She even put a real bird nest on top of the cabin.

My son wired a red camping lantern so it was electrified instead of oil burning and hung that by the cabin door. We hung burlap over the closet and an X made of cedar fence boards across the top and painted "dangerous mine; do not enter" on the fence boards which we hung high on the opening of the closet.

We hung an interesting tree limb for a curtain rod over his window and made a curtain out of green and black plaid flannel (lumberjack-ish fabric) to hang from the limb.

She's an artist and painted woods, mountains, a lake, etc as a mural on all 4 walls. Oh, and she added a kid-size picnic table with built-in benches for his desk/work area. He LOVED it...and when they sold the house, the new owners put in the contract that they wanted them to leave the room intact!

I know these ideas are boy-ish, but maybe they'll spark some ideas that will work with your daughter's room. The really DUMB thing is that we never took photos of it or I would share them.

Sarah-that sounds SO adorable for a camping/outdoor theme. You described it well and I can almost picture how everything was. It sounds really fun and I'm glad the new owners left it for their little ones. :)

Please make sure the crib is away from the window treatment. That could be dangerous if she pulled on them.

What do you think about a long white credenza type piece instead of the brown three drawer dresser? I found this one one CL for about $75. Lots of storage (hidden) and you could add some short legs to the bottom to get it off the carpet a bit and add a design element. There are other styles but this is just a general idea. You could add cute hardware too.

I have a tall yellow lamp that could be perfect for you - I just don't have room for it. Adding a lamp that is taller onto a slightly higher piece of furniture will give your eye different heights in the room... And it would be great with the 'Wild and Free' artwork that I love love love!

I'm sure you use the chair for bottle time so a slip cover would be great.

I have had really good luck finding area rugs at IKEA and Kmart (white and gray large striped) for under $100 new. Finding a really big rug with a cheery color would be nice in here .

I love the Teepee but know that if the space in the room doesn't fit something shaped like a teepee you can always design your own teepee/fort easily. And building a cute book holder up against the wall or side of a dresser can't be that hard.

Maximize the spaces you have. Hide the stuff as much as possible. Get things off the floor. Those are three of my top tips.
