Well, why exactly are you wanting to paint, is my question? I actually like the green color of the walls. Is it the green you don't like, or something else?
If you painted your staircase railing a black/green and replaced your barstools to black and maybe replaced the formal chandelier to something more casual...I think the whole room would look entirely differently. And the green would be fine. I would also lower some of your wall art. I noticed the 2 plates and middle piece to the right of the frig is a bit high for the table underneath. I'm not sure if those are switch plates for a light and plug on the wall in staircase are, but paint those the same color as the wall, so they will blend in better. When I first saw the photograph, my first thought is that these rooms have too much wood all the same color. That's why I'm asking. Not to be hurtful, just wondering..

Thanks for your help. It is the colour I want to get rid of. I am looking to lighten it up. I will definitely take your advice. Other than the kitchen table all the wood was here when we moved in. I would love to paint the cupboards white. What do you think?

What colour would you suggest I use as an accent colour?do you see what I mean when I say all of my rooms are connected.I am also trying to do it on a fixed income as both myself and my husband are retired.

I understand totally about the budget....the problem is if you paint the cabinets white then they are going to blend in with the floor and all the blonde wood furniture....
If you do paint the cabs white then you I think you should still have a darker wall to contrast, but you don't have to. How to you feel about a light or medium bluish/gray with white cabinets? You could paint the barstools you have now unless you are set on having the wood. White, blue and the butter yellow can be very pretty together. Then you could get a rug eventually that is darker to bring some contrast to the light flooring. Are you with me? :)

Another thing you may want to do is to move that mirror that's hanging in the stairwell and hang it on the wall in the dining area.
I'm just thinking that IF you paint those cabs white, you have a light floor, light countertops, light backsplash.....you really need something to contrast with the white besides the wall color. If this was an uber modern kitchen you may be able to get away with something like that, but the home looks very traditional and so do your furnishings. I was trying to suggest things where you DON'T have to spend a lot of money changing other things...which I'm afraid you will have to if you paint the cabs white. There is a grayish blue that is very pretty, but may be too dull for you. It's called Stone Fence by Behr. I'll try and find a sample pic.

You could use this color on the walls and then do a couple of shades darker of this on your bottom cabs and paint the uppers white....what do you think about that idea?

you could also do a sage green if you want to stay in the green family....i'm not leaving you hanging, but i may be off the computer in a little bit. fyi :)

I really like the colour you picked out . It is one i would never have thought about. I defiantly will take your advice , about the mirror as well. What would you put over the stair well? I put the mirror to bring in more light from the upstairs bedrooms as that is where the afternoon sun comes in.

joaquin7, will you be planning on leaving the upstairs walls green? If you lighten the wall color where the mirror is as well, that will help brighten it up. I would probably do a gallery wall of some sort. Great place for pics of the family intermixed with other art and you can always throw a couple of small mirrors in there as well. :)

I wouldn't paint the cabinets but maybe change the hardware to an aged bronze or brushed nickle. I would then change the light fixtures to a more modern/traditional one that would coordinate your knobs and counter accessories. I would place a large mirror on the wall in place of the plates. As for the wall color I would change the wall color to a soft grey/blue or grey taupe similar to the one suggested to tie in with the floor. I would avoid painting wood unless you have someone do it professionally. I would then change fabric of the kitchen chairs with the same or similar shade of outdoor/durable fabric. This is an inexpensive fix that is easy to do. You can then coordinate with a simalr fabric to bring color by adding a valance over your slider and kitchen window. You may wan the fabric to have a touch a yellow to tie that in since it is visible to the kitchen, Keep in mind to match the hardware on valances to also coordinate with light fixtures, knobs... Also I would clear off the clutter on the fridge. It will look newer/nicer...sorry. You can get a decorative framed cork/message board to neatly display pictures...

If you go to Behr.com you can pick a color you love and it will give you all the options that go with it. It's awesome. Are you keeping your chair fabric? If not maybe pick a new fabric you love and go from there. Keep in mind all your decor seems to be in the colors you currently have...so if you don't want to change all of that you may have to stay in the same family of colors. What about adding some wallpaper? If you did the walls in the dining area, it would give the room a new look. Sometimes just moving things around can make a space feel fresh. Adding a new are rug, new throw pillows etc. I think your home feels very cozy and warm.
