My Tim, almost 9 will be getting his tonsils and adnoids out this Tuesday, they are also going to scope him to see if they find any narrowing anywhere that could be causing him to get the croup so often. He's having this done at Childrens hospital of Pittsburgh. I am a nervous wreck LOL.. I know this is routinely done and generally has a textbook outcome. He will be spending the night Tuesday to watch for bleeding and for pain management. I didn't really want to do this but his tonsils are chronically enlarged and he has sleep apnea most likely caused from this enlargement. He doesn't even need to know that while he's out before they do anything he's having 2 stubborn baby molars removed..LOL. I thought I'd sneak into the hospital laundry room but its too risky to carry germs back out not to mention its a locked down unit lol.

Glad for encouraging news. Hope he will gradually drink more fluids.

Day 4....his throat hurts worse today than yesterday and he's developed a low grade fever 100. OMG I looked at his throat..how absolutly horrible it looks. He ate two tiny bites of frozen yogurt a few days ago and tried one bite of mac and cheese but couldn't swollow it. So he's not eaten at all since Monday. I'm not worried about not eating as long as he's drinking which he is, course I have to coach every drop into him LOL. Otherwise all seems ok. If his temp goes higher than I'll have him seen as that will indicate infection..low grade however is normal its what happens during healing.

Laundry related issues LOL..he's been on the couch all this time. I have a thin quilted matteress pad layed down with 2 flat percale sheets for him to lay on, he's using 3 bed pillows covered with pillow covers and vintage percale pillowcases. And covering with a lightweight summer down comforter in a vintage 100% cotton duvet cover (twin). I have enough of everything of course for a complete change daily. But all the ironing is a job and I'm not ironing the duvet covers. Last night in order to get ahead I ironed 27 pillowcases and 8 flat full size sheets. Today I'm of course doing Amiee's And my bedding..so lots more ironing later..Dont even say it..LOL.. I've slept on ironed sheets too long to be able to get comfortable on unironed ones. LOL. Happy Happy and all that.xoxo

You can always call the ER or urgent care. Is he urinating ok?

    mamapinky0 thanked enduring

He's ...urinating 2x's a day...but a lot at once...and since I wrote the above he ate about 1/4 cup mac and cheese. .he drank 2....12 oz bottles of apricot nector today and about 10 oz white grape juice. He wants no part of popsicles LOL he's not allowed a slushy as the doc says the tiny slivers of ice could dislodge the clot and of course that's what he wants. LOL....temp hasn't gone above 100 but that was on tylenol. I let his dose run late by 30 minutes so I could get an accurate temp and its normal now..the nurse called to check on him today..she said its normsl not to eat for the first week, just push fluids. And reminded me when he does eat all foods must be soft with a creamy texture for 17 days. Mac and cheese is fine as long as its not baked and the macroni is over cooked..I bought the frozen Stoffers..its very soft. I see improvement this evening so that's good. He may have had less issues if they wouldn't have had to mess around in there. ..on a good note....his snooring has stopped and no signs of sleep apnea anymore.

You need to followup. Is he on an antibiotic?

    mamapinky0 thanked rpsinfoman

Sin, no antibotic, but all of his papers say expect a fever up to 100 for the first week and that he will refuse fluids and food and its my responsability to MAKE him drink. I do. I don't think it will hurt for me to act the overly concerned (oh, wait, I am) grandmother and take him into urgicare in the morning, I will take him to ER tonight if I think he needs it though. Actually Sin...the more I think about it..maybe I should just hop into the er tonight..just to air on the side of ccaution, after all I don't know how high his fever may have been it went to 100 on tylenol and I'm sure it would have been higher without tylenol. it could very well be an infection. Thanks Sin....I'm taking him in tonight.

Tims doing fine..no sign of infection. Blood work showed he's not dehydrated but slightly low so they gave him a bag of fluids. Throat looks like its in the early stages of healing, some kids heal fast some slower. All in all he looks fine to the doctor. I'm to contact his

ENT tomorrow or return to the ER if needed. So good news and it eased my mind.

    (((HUGS))) to you all.

ER called a few minutes ago and want us to take Tim in for repeat blood work...looks like last nights test did show possiable infection somewhere. I expect they will start antibotics. Today he's having very bad jaw pain. Yikes no rest for the weary..haha.

So sorry to hear that he may have an infection after all. I'm glad the ER called you about it.

Elevated WBC and fever is always a sure sign of an infection. I am surprised this wasn't followed up more agressively, given the state of his health and history. A fever of 100 or more several days post op is another sure sign.

Aww its ok Donna and Thank you....Tim has made a dramitic improvement in the past few days. I had him back to the ER for a possiable infection...they rechecked his labs and did not feel an antibotic was needed...I disagreed...because by than it was day five and he was undeniably ill...I insisted on them starting the Z-Pak...within two days he was eating soft foods, drinking without me forcing the issue and up out of bed...he's still on the couch a great deal but at least he's up and down. Hes playing board games with his brother and asking for food...I'm pleased with his recovery the last few days. He lost 9 pounds the first week and yet doctors wanted to argue with me. Tim is not a complainer if he says somethings wrong...somethings wrong. It took 2 ER trips and than into his ped before anyone would write a script...before this they were happy to write them out monthly for his throat infections...anyway I knew he needed antibotics and he did....he's doing great..today he said I can't wait till I'm allowed cajon fish. Lol.

In case you've noticed..I'm trying to forget about the biopsys..not working..wish I'd get results soon but they said it could take 4 weeks.

Good for you Mama insisting on the antibiotic. I swear sometimes doctors act dumb.

We know better then them sometimes because we know our kids or our bodies and what's normal and abnormal.

Just like we know our washers better than the manufactures.

So glad to hear Tim is now getting better...finally. Thanks to you being smart.

Hubs has COPD...a few weeks ago he seen his primary care who after reviewing x-rays and lab work set him up with an appt to have a Cat-scan of the lungs....the test results were sent to a doc at the cancer center Latrobe Pa..15 minutes from us...the day after the scan a lung doctor called but hubs was at work so he spoke to me....hubs scan shows a large mass at the top of his left lung and the bottom of that lung has calapsed...we are to go into meet and talk to this lung doctor on the 12'th....where he will tell us what's next...What the .....heck....next??? He also ask if it would be ok to have a therapist there to talk with us. I suppose a biopsy would be next..so why the meeting with a thrapist even before the biopsy. I wasn't going to mention this until the weekend was over but...I've convinced myself that the therapist is to help hubs withthe stress of a lung biopsy...iI'll let you know what happens..but per doctors orders hubs isn't allowed out doing yard work.. he wasn't gonna listen so I did what I had to do...I took the storage shed keys, and the tractor keys and hid them in a box of Tide. He's argued with me a number of times today about them...I told him if he doesn't just go relax I'm going to shoot him....the man knows I'm boss.

Thanks guys.....last night I had a hard time sleeping..kept thinking of the what if's...I want the 12'th to get here yet I don't...on a great note.

It was two weeks yesterday for Tim...he's fairly recovered although his throat still has tender looking areas. Hes craved cajon grilled fish but isn't allowed seasoning like that for another week. Lol...he's also craved a McDonalds double cheeseburger..gross I know but he's a kid....I got him one yesterday as he is allowed burgers that are soft as long as its small bites and chews well..he loved it. I'm to hold off on any hard crunchy or crispy food another week, and tomato based or spicy. In the past 15 days Tims lost 13 pounds. It did not hurt him one bit believe me. He just would not eat and the doc told me to let it go and offer a milkshake that ensure was added to. He at least sipped at it. Anyway he feels great now and I am so glad this is over..one thing..I wonder if when they scoped his voice box if it did something...Tims voice is changed..drastically changed to the point that I can barely hear any resembelance to his voice before...I'm telling you it has tramatized me. I don't like my boy suddenly sounding different.

Mama Cheryl, I missed the whole thread about hubs and just now came back. I'm so sorry for you and what you are going through. I, too, am kinda in the same boat -- my hubs starts radiation and chemo for throat cancer and will have a big time with eating, swallowing, etc. I was going to ask about Tim just this week but didn't get to it. Too many doctors to see, places to go, you know how that is. I have great support from doctors and friends so will try to be a good girl. You do the same. Take advantage of your medical center's offers of help. They do know best that you need to take care of yourself also.

I really do love Winston Churchill's line: Keep Calm and Carry On.

    Love you, Girlie.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Pat, your husband and family...let me know if you ever need someone just to talk to and I'll send my phone #...Love you back lady.
