Hello there! Sounds like a decent size room but think about how you walk through there to adjacent rooms. Chair or recliners don't usually sit in threes, usually in pairs. My suggestion would be do a longer sofa that can sit 4 people and don't get oversized arms(this will eat up needed square footage). And do a pair of recliners with the long sofa. Again the larger the recliner the more floor space it will take up. Consider smaller arms on all pieces. This will give you comfortable seating for 5 even 6 with the extended sofa. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I am posting some pics. We are a family of mostly 6 foot tall folks or above. No one likes sitting in the middle seat of a couch and "sharing" space (especially on movie nights). That means a couch with 3 cushions really only practically seats 2 people. How do we get maximum seating with enough "personal" space for everyone in this room? Any suggestions would be helpful. 1st photo is from almost in front of fireplace/tv. 2nd photo from back of love seat looking into room /tv/fireplace from hallway. 3rd pic is from back of love seat from hallway looking toward couch. We are under utilizing the space of this room. Open kitchen is to the right from the 1st pic. Don't want to block access to kitchen too much. (Dog is facing kitchen). The room is "open" on 2 sides.

Hi, it's hard to conciliate good looks and confort. I think the family room is the most used room besides the kitchen in the house, so should be more about confort! You said yourself, movie nights, big family, tall people, and nobody likes to be on top of each other. So, that said I would make everyone happy and get on of the theaters seats and 2 singles to put on the sides. Good luck!

If the choice is as you say between two couches or one couch and three recliners, I would definitely go with the two couches, unless you simply don't care what your room looks like. But you say you want it to look good for company, and I have yet to see a picture of 3 recliners in a room your size where it looks good (talking family rooms, not media rooms). I would put the two couches where you currently have the sofa/love seat, replace the coffee table with a large round upholstered ottoman that way people can put their feet up if they like (assuming your couches don't recline). Then maybe put a recliner on the right, so your walkway to the kitchen isn't blocked too much. Then get a couple of nice side tables for your drinks and popcorn. But there are other configurations that could work:

Thanks KB. I was definitely thinking of the large round ottoman. I LOVE the first example you posted with the chaise next to the couch. I was thinking of a chaise near the windows but I like it nestled against the couch like that. Trying to do something a bit different and this might work!

Or you could do a couch and 4 really comfy chairs with 4 ottomans. Couch facing the TV, two chairs against the wall and two chairs facing the other chairs.
