It's hard to tell what color your counter is, we used a marble subway for ours that I just love. We used Lansdale Carrara Amalfi from the Tile Shop, but there are lots of lovely marbles to choose from. Ours has almost a pinkish tone with a hint of rust - but it matches the wood & dining room lights. I really wanted herringbone, but the compromise was just a regular subway pattern. I'd strongly recommend getting a sample of tile(s) and bringing it home to compare the colors and undertones with your countertop & cabinet colors. Good luck!

Oh - just make sure you seal the tile if it's stone/marble. We haven't had any problems with ours and we just make sure we wipe off any splatters right away.

I'd say either go with glass that is papered or painted on the back so that it can be changed without a major reno. OR, choose a white tile and make t more interesting with spots of your favorite color(s) so it's not overwhelmingly one color. Check out some dichroic tiles to add some sparkle. (Just Google it)

My vote is the herringbone - fabulous!!!

We have enjoyed this "sideways" herringbone made with back painted 3x6 glass tile. Super easy to clean and elegant. You can make whatever design you like with these tiles. Think we paid $1.07/sf for the material - so it's

inexpensive too.

This is a great alternative to a regular ceramic tile. It has a handmade custom look to it with its wavy uneven pattern. You can find it at floor and decor for around $3.00 sq foot.

I personally like the herringbone pattern. The only thing I would do differently is not break it up with the electrical outlets. I have a strip that fits up under the cabinets with outlets. The tile is uninterrupted. Good luck with your project.

@dandcnisky, I agree with you and would have loved that. Except they have already finished that part and it would be costly to change.

Seems like all this has been done so many times before- what about some antique brick- either crusty or painted white or light gray? I think some texture might be charming.

I personally don't like color in the kitchen unless it's a small item (towels, toaster, pans). I have a similar color scheme as yours in my kitchen & I really love this tumbled marble backsplash. It just never looks dirty!

Perhaps you could consider a marbelized cement backsplash? Adds interest, conversation peice and would be cohesive with your flooring.

My last kitchen I used Glass Subway tiles which I loved. They were reasonable in price from thebuilderdepot.com . Maybe check them out if you want to go the glass route. (most stores they cost $28-30 sq ft)

My advice.... stop listening to all the opinions on Houzz! It's YOUR kitchen, you have to love it. It doesn't matter what a designer thinks if it's not your taste. It took me 4 months after the cabinets were installed to pick my backsplash because of all the conflicting comments I got on here. When I stopped asking for advice and did my own thing is when the process of designing my kitchen became fun. By the looks of it, you're doing a great job with finishes! Just trust your gut and do whatever your heart desires, it's your kitchen!

love love love herringbone. are you thinking carrara marble herringbone? that would be my vote. I do also like the beveled tile that Should You Sell Or Should You Stay posted above. that would be my second choice.

Your kitchen looks great and is coming along very nicely. Since you will be finished with your project in a relatively short time, there are not many changes that you can make at this point. But the only suggestion I would give you, is to do the herringbone backsplash, and when your cabinet doors arrive and are installed, choose subtle silver hardware for them that will compliment the noise of the pattern of the tile, and shine against the grain of the countertop. I have ordered the hardware already and they are mercury glass but not the really shiny kind. It looks great against the white doors. I will go shopping for backsplash once doors are installed this weekend. I think it will be easier to choose that way since I can bring it back home and see how it will look all together. Definitely want a to stay on tone with the rest of my kitchen - greys/whites and no glass tiles.

What color are counters and back splash? Are you struggling with the shape, color, or texture of back splash?

First and foremost, when I design for the client, I learn about the client. I don't put my design for myself and since I wouldn't be in the living space. I look at this kitchen with many possibilities, upgrades, and creative unique ideas. would like to know more about the herring bone. are you of a contemporary streamlined looking, or vintage with a mix of rich color and bold character? These questions are only a few I will ask to get to the structure and design that's a livable showcase.

Since you have already installed electric outlets on the wall, I might try a test of printable plates, and finish to blend in with your tile. If that's not to your liking look on-line for custom plates with as little contrast as possible to blend softly with your other accents (pulls, faucet). Under cabinet outlets is best IMHO

Use a kitchen designer. She added so many details, was so worth the over all small expense. I have the kitchen I wanted. I also had a wonderful contractor who kept to his schedule.

Here's what we ended up doing with the the outlets.

Something to consider with anything that has grout. If you cook a lot, i.e., frying, canning, spaghetti sauce, etc. I'd skip any type of tile with grout altogether. Cleaning perfectly will NOT happen, unless you're fixing to get out a bottle of Clorox bleach and a toothbrush. If you pick a backsplash, for example, like Travertine, then you have "grooves" or "pits" within those tiles. Guess what... nasty, nasty, nasty.

You can simply take the same color of existing countertop and run it up as a backsplash, or match it with cheap formica. Yeah, I know, but let me explain. You have a TOTALLY flat CLEANABLE surface. Spray, wipe. Zip, zip. Easy peasy. Grout... a whole other animal. If you use formica, saves tons of dollars!

Beautiful choices so far! You may have had this suggestion already, but have you considered framing a feature section of herringbone pattern above the cooktop with subway pattern throughout the rest of the space? This will draw your eye to that element along with your beautiful range hood. Marble is always gorgeous in this application, and with your current choices, but if thats too pricy you can also mix the sizes. That way and still have a beautiful and cohesive design. Traditional white subway is always classy and visually extending when ran horizontally

absolutely abhor this framing design so many are using. I just don't get it. What are you framing? tile in a different direction? Pears in a basket? Hang a picture, you can change it whenever you like.

I do do do love herringbone and think you are going in the right direction.

I have come to realize that when I step away from a project when it becomes overwhelming or I get stuck, I get a better sense of what direction it should go when I come back to it. It works more organically and I don't feel as much pressure.

I know it's probably very traditional, but I like a brick backsplash. Not too light and not too dark, I like the typical brick color. I plan to use it in my kitchen remodel, with a wood floor that has a tint of red, such as cherry. I'm replacing my dull gray cabinets with white, and plan on a country red or blue island.

Just curious, what are your countertops? I am about to choose countertops to go with my white cabinets and am leaning toward grey quartz. Your kitchen looks great and would love to see updated photos!

Our countertops are made of glass that is hand carved with textures and then painted with enamel based paints. We can customize any of our existing designs or create your own custom glass countertop. People have sent us images of landscapes of local flora that we transferred into glass.

I'm going through the same process. I love herringbone, but am worried I will get sick of it. I think I'm opting for a grey/white staggered tile similar to the picture of posted. Please post a picture of what you decide.

I love quartz. You could do quartz in counters under cabinets ( any nuetral grey, taupe, tan or white & something else in island as an accent.

Under cabinet lighting would give the kitchen a warm evening glow and electric outlets could be relocated and hidden under the cabinets for a cleaner more even back splash. Kitchen is really nice! Hardware is jewelry for the cabinetry so be picky and choose something glamorous or eye catching.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Under cabinet lighting and base lighting are bring installed. They are waiting for me to choose a backsplash to install to finish everything around the same time.

The cabinet doors have been installed and the hardware.

After months and months if searching, I found 2 that I like. The bevelled thasos and the diamond patterned one, which Im surprised that I really like.

I found it at a random tile shop. It says Goodtile but googled it and can't find any info on the company.

If you can't find info on it, buy extra and stash it away. You never know.....

Absolutely love herringbone backsplash! I would keep color and grout nuetral because herringbone can be very busy. It's a classic design
