Your current rug is too brown so your new rug should be more gray with perhaps some blue in it.

This picture does no justice to the actual rug and color, but it will give you some idea with a little imagination. It has your blues and grays with some beige and a touch of black in a beautiful Ikat pattern. It looks like you have plenty of light in the room to pull of this look with the right tables. A blue rug will not be your friend here. It will make your sofas look even greener by contrast.

You would neutralize a green undertone with more green, but I haven't found the right one, and then it sort of defeats the purpose of getting rid of the green.

This is a bit off topic, but have you considered placing your sofas facing each other on either side of the fireplace? It looks like one is cutting off the access/view to your kitchen and the window area looks like a vast expanse of wilderness -- more than a bit unsettling. If you place them facing each other, floating a bit in the space, then your choice of area rug will feel more successful because the whole arrangement will feel more cohesive. Add a coffee table and you're good to go.

P. S. By the way, you are going to take the plastic off the bottom panel of your sofas, right?

Best way to detract from the two tones of grey not quite aligning, in my opinion, would be to bring in more colors -- perhaps via a Chechen like this.

@taragonder yes we have considered moving the sofas, but this is the prime space for my kids to play/run/jump so we decided this configuration blocks off the kitchen as a semi-boundary for them while giving them ample room to play. We will be doing small side tables that tuck in beside the sofas and no coffee table at this time.

We just got the sofa a day before I took the picture, hence the plastic on it =P
