I think these might bring the colors together well?

For the rug, you might just want to get a luxury solid rug from the big flooring store in your town. dark blue perhaps?

    Christie Street, these may not be your "cup of tea" but, if not, maybe they can help you envision/find what is appropriate for over your couch. Perhaps it is easier to see on your photo than in person that, the sofa, walls, and draperies seem to work better together if you cover up the rug. It's a beautiful rug it just doesn't seem to have the same "look" as the rest of your choices. [FYI, I am NOT an expert. That's just my "take" on it. There are some very capable people on Houzz that really know their stuff and have wise and helpful ideas!}

I just re-read your statement describing the current colors and see that the rug is blue, not gray. It just looks gray in the photo. Perhaps if the artwork includes that same blue, it will help. 'Can't wait to see how you complete this beautiful room. :)

    Loved the pillows!!

Vicki- I get what your saying. I'll see what I can find that will incorporate my colors. I really want to make it feel like home. I like family photos or pictures of the scenery here in Nola. I wish I had more wall space I'd love to have a picture gallery.

    I'll post the finished product.

Wow what a difference widen the rods made. Just because a space is small doesn't mean everything has to be small. Can't wait to see room finished.

I think you need the things you already mentioned (coffee table or ottoman, side table, fix curtain length, only one or two more pillows) but also art and a new rug like others have said. What do you think of a look like this?:

Also can we get pics of the whole space? Why is there only furniture on one side of the room?

christie, i am glad you like the pillows, i think they allow you to in other directions if necessary. I will get you other pillows as you finalize other details.

i really believe that you might be better off with a simple solid color rug and if you are doing that you should go get a luxury one for much less money at the big flooring store. I can give you other rugs, but they will be close to one color too.

are we worried about small children in regards to tables?

Jordan I'm on a budget so I didn't take pictures of the rest of the room because it is bare right now.

Having fun...I like those rugs that are solid but have variations of the same color. So yes I'd like to see more suggestions and no small children mine are grown. This is actually my first time decorating for me I threw out all the stained furniture etc and I'm starting from scratch.

but christie, if you give pics of the whole room they can help more with positioning. some of these people can do quite incredible things. Even i know that your couch should not be against the wall, but you did not ask about it, so i left it alone.

now if you are on a budget, I would remember to look for hard things at charity thrift stores and restore store. especially china cabinets and all kinds of bookshelves are being ditched. oh yeah and craigs. a few months ago I scored 8'x8'x18" wall unit with a bunch of cabinets and lighting! $40!

Love the first 2 rugs. Are they available on houzz? Love the nesting tables as well. I've been looking at trunks as well. The one you have pictured here is too fancy for me.
I posted the same rug but in blue gray a few comments back. Not sure if you saw that color...cause you said you liked it:)

I think with those floral curtains, you need to go pretty subdued on the rug. But I'm not quite sold on the blue with the curtains.

    Maybe something much more neutral.

I had a jute rug in neutral and it looked horrible.
I don't like the design on it.
Ditto regarding wider curtain rods; there's a great article or two in Houzz regarding hanging curtains which may have guidelines for suggested widths.

ditched the rug. on a side note, regarding curtains. i love pooling curtains myself and every curtain store still does that, i could be wrong, but if that is their passion would they not know?

regarding a gallery wall. it does not have to be large. and you can have more than one.

oh yes, i found the last rug looking for the blue. if you go on a computer there is a spot to click right below the pic. let me get the other for you. the blue rug is sold out on my site and there is no description. the other rug is a loiloi and is on houzz along with other places.

did you like the bamboo gold table for coffee? i have another 2 trunks, though i think one is too light.

If you don't want to change the rug, I think Mark nailed it in his rendering above.

I think I want to go with nesting tables for the side of the couch and I think a nice wood table or truck for the coffee table. The room is rectangular do I have to have a rectangle or oval table? When I get a chance I'll add pictures of the rest of the room so you guys can see.
I had curtains that pooled on the floor a couple years back and all they did was collect dust. I measured the ones to the right wrong and will be taking them to get hemmed to match the other side of the room.

Hi Christie. I think you're getting some great help here. May I ask what budget you're working with for coffee table and nesting tables?

I don't want to go over 300$ on coffee table and 150$ or 200$ for end table.

Agreed I'm getting great advise here.

gee christie, you are rich. with me end tables do not go over $105 and coffee tables $150. if you do not like what i gave let me know. i will ditch, do you not want gold, i thought it went well with the dark blue and rust. i could give you copper?

do you want a tv console? and yes, we can make your room look more full. there are many that are better than me at it and they often give you pics too.

do you like the old wood look or rich wood? did you like either of the trunks?

Having fun...I love the gold. I'd like to use the nesting tables as a end table on the side of the couch. I also I liked how you sent me the picture of the 2 tables as a coffee table. Yes I need a piece under the tv. I fell in love with this one...what do you think?
You made me laugh with the rich thing. That is my max budget. If I can get cheaper that is definitely what I'll do.

The console piece is beautiful Christie. Whatever you decide for an end table, just be sure it comes within an inch of your sofa arm.

Does that mean the table need to be almost as long as the end of the sofa?

    i think that is height

You can try 3D wall mural for the wall. Nice ottoman instead of a coffee table.

    Thank you!

Sorry-I should have clarified-I did mean height of the table.

    Thank you!

I think you need some artwork on the walls

yes, that would be wonderful. look in your town for artists or go to etsy or saatchiart. all carry original art.

Yes I do Connie...just trying to get the basic pieces before I start adding accessories.

After all the great advice everyone gave me this weekend. I'm overwhelmed. I'm currently trying to decide if I should paint the wall behind the couch and contemplating a new rug.

I wish I knew how to insert the items as many of you did for me so I could see what the change would look like. I'm technically challenged.

Wow love how Beverly changed the wall color to a similar gray to rug...helped make it work better w room for sure
  • 9 years ago
Jordan I liked the color on the wall as well but the rug is blue so if I painted I'm thinking it would need be a light blue.
I think a shade or two lighter than the rug would look great. Not super light imo

    i picked up another rug.

Add a large piece of Art ..An art on your walls will not only give your walls an instant pop of color, but the paintings will add another layer of texture and dimension to your room, and nothing is as reflective of one’s style as the art in one’s home. A home truly looks and feels lived-in when there’s a nice collection of art hanging on the walls.
