One little thing right off the bat…I do not like the dark ceiling molding or the color of the shelf. They are dragging things down some.

Next: not loving the wall color. You have lots of windows. From what direction does the light come?

Window behind the sofa faces west and the large window faces south. Wall colour is plain white. I was thinking of some type of a lower and lighter colour media stand for the TV. Different kind of coffee table perhaps and smaller table lamps. Ceiling is not in the budget to change and the wall unit - the shelves and cabinets can be rearranged.

I love the mid century furniture as base. I agree--it just needs some layers of color with pillows, throws, art, curtains. I might also take down that top wood shelf with collectibles.

Love the wood ceiling and midcentury credenza, wall unit and coffee table. These are nice pieces and work well together. The room needs some colour accents ... Maybe teal, grey or green? Some pillows, something to set on the coffee table and on the wall unit that tie in together.

On the tv wall ... there's lots of clutter here. Could your husband move his stereo components to the wall unit on the other wall? Get some brightly coloured clips to get the wires under control. Maybe look at some new speakers that take up less room ....Not sure what to do with the collectibles ... Could another way of displaying them be found ... Or decide to just display a cherished few on the wall unit?

A bullet planter in a bold colour would look great. Also, the Eames lounger blocks the end table on the left side of the couch. Could a floor lamp or swag lamp go there instead?

The curtains are two different colors - if it's in the same space, they should be the same fabric and length as well. Otherwise, you could do roman shades for the smaller windows.

This room is a bit similar to your color scheme. The window treatments are a Belgian flax linen in Mist Gray.

How do your curtains look when opened? Each curtain panel should at least be the width of your windows.

Alternatively, a Belgian linen in Dark Gray would look quite nice in your space as well. I'm not sure if you'd find it too heavy though.

I would leave the wood ceiling & built-ins, since they provide a warm & cozy feel. I would paint the walls, match the window treatments, replace the lamp shades, replace the coffee table (& perhaps the end tables) with matte gold metal ones. I would also place an animal hide/rug under the new coffee table & add some artwork. You could also replace the ceiling fixtures to draw your eye upward. You have a great room to work with -- have fun!

I like the credenza & desk/shelf unit. I do not like the coffee or end tables I think they do make the room too woody. Agree to get rid of collectible shelf. Can you place the items on the desk/shelf unit in fun ways spread out?! A textured rug would be great & I like the prior curtain suggestions! I like the chair in the man space & the couch seems fine. What a beautiful view from that room! Post your finished space!

To me, the wood ceiling appears to lower the height of the room. I know there are many who will blast me, but I would paint the ceiling (and I usually don't suggest painting wood paneling). If not the ceiling, then at least paint the dark trim. I go along with the other Houzz'ers about adding come color. Good luck!

ditto for the paint. A velvety blue color would look amazing w/that wood.

Bring in some black and white along with it. rug, throws, art, etc. The ceiling is amazing. I would think about losing the chair w/the matching ottoman and replace it w/something that has a pattern.

Thank you everybody for your input and ideas. I'll get working on this room and will post updates. Might take some time though.

One more suggestion, addressing the natural light from South/West. Both are very strong and can wreak havoc on wall color.Try two samples on the wall. If the South light is dominant, then B.M. Gull Wing Gray will be perfect. If the West light is dominant, try B.M. Valley Forge Tan, a beautiful color with this faint undertone of lilac which will control that mean West light.

The room would look a lot airier if the tv were mounted on the wall as well as the speakers and move the amp/receiver, the speaker under it to the shelves of your desk and remove the table in the corner altogether. Its just too much stuff. The eames chair could move to the area away from the sofa a bit. Also, unless you really need them I would remove the drapery. The room is so mid-century modern that the less you have in there and the more organized it is, the better it will all work together....just like all the built-ins and detail of the 50's and 60's modernist era.

Noticed your olive green lamp and it's a great color for your room - I would use that as your jumping off point - even painting the wall behind the couch green. It looks like you are not using the upper shelving over the credenza and I would remove and add really colorful/impactful art there. Move your chair over towards the window and add some large plants. Instead of drapes, a more simple look are blinds. Add lots of pillows and a colorful centerpiece on your coffee table. The room just needs some personality and your eyes will be drawn to the colors and decorative pieces vs all the wood.

No way would I lose the Eames chair. It's a mid-century classic, and if it's authentic it's the most comfortable and beautiful lounge chair I've ever experienced. The real ones cost a fortune. They do, however, look best when given breathing space. I'd forget about centering the sofa under the window and scoot the sofa over to give the chair a lot more room. Also, the end table sort of drowns it. A lower, light weight end table, like a Platner, works fabulously with the Eames. I'd be tempted to remove the other large end table also, and use only a coffee table for the sofa. If you need the light, a free-standing arched lamp in that corner could work.

I was about to say you need some COLOUR! Lime green, sunshine yellow, happy orange, poppy purple, fun fushia - something to give some life. And MCM had these themes (common in Europe for this period). Think "Pop Art" and Andy Warhol.

You have the PERFECT setting to rock this! Everything is ready - just need some pop art and you are off to the races...and yes the curtains need to be dealt with.

Keep going. Your instincts are excellent. Just think a little bit more "pop" in the pop art direction and you will be in the home stretch! Have fun. Look to your closet to see what colours make you happy.
