My first thought would be to look into a clear film like XPEL that they use on the front bumpers and hoods of automobiles to protect from dings and rock chips. The better products are barely noticeable and provide quite good protection. You might try looking to see if there are any installers in your area that would sell you a small piece of the film. You should be able install it yourself since the surfaces are flat the install would be pretty easy. It would be nice to repair the worn areas before installing the film.

My cabinet company offered a protective brushed aluminum strip to attach to the top edge of an inset waste can door. Maybe something like that might work.
