And yes, I agree with them. Paint the wood, paint the cabinets, do not paint the brick, but if you feel like stucco or sheetrock and painting that... yes.
Painted brick fireplaces, in my very personal opinion, very often make it look cheap.

DO NOT PAINT THE BRICK!!!! Paint everything else though as it will give it a nice cheery light look.

I would also think about taking out the built in cabinets altogether as it gives it a kind of dated look and makes the room so much smaller since they extend past the fireplace (unlike the examples in the other posts). Without the cabinets, I think the room would be more spacious and light, and have a more modern vibe. Not to mention the fireplace would become more a focus point.
