I personally always paint my ceilings. Generally by cutting the wall color to half strength. You'll probably get more advice if you post a picture though.

I am older and I paint my ceilings white. I like the crisp difference between the ceiling and the walls. Some add a cup or so of paint color to white to paint the ceiling, but if you change the wall color, then you have to repaint the ceiling. Some add a hint of blue to resemble the sky. It is all personal preference and there is no right or wrong.
