When you search in the box above, make sure the search specifies "in Photos" and not "in Shop" or "in Advice".

The first time I got onto Houzz, I was looking for ideas about designing a study in a long, very narrow room. I went to "photos," and clicked on "home office." That gave me about 200,000 photos to look at. So I filtered it down by typing in "long, narrow study" which gave me about 1900 photos. That was enough to be getting on with.

So, if you just want ideas, start with whatever room (or issue) you have and either go to "photos" directly, or type whatever you're looking for in the search bar and then click on the photo option. That'll get you started.

or you can put your search under advice, i don't think there is one problem that has not been worked on at least once.

Houzz is like a library - keep searching - and as said, use specific words that interest you. Choose photos - to the right most times are ideas given by designers... kind of nice to hear how it's done. Stories have articles -- many.

HF: I agree. Houzz is only herd mentality if you follow the herd. Otherwise, it gives you lots of directions in which to head out on your own. I've learned a lot about design basics (not to mention construction codes) here, but ultimately, I make up my own mind. Trends R not Us.

Looking around my new house, I reckon I'm five trends behind the times. I don't care. I like my house and it speaks of me, to me. That's all that matters. And I'm sure you feel exactly the same.

Rosanne, I am assuming that this is not the first website that you've gone to for ideas. Think about it - if you go to any website that has ideas you are going to be bombarded with ads.

Are you having a bad day Sophie , really if that is how you feel that is sad I think there are lots of ideas that are not herd mentality at all

Never a dull moment when Sophie is around! She can be rude at times but her answers are always correct.
I do agree with her statement. Gray with a plain white kitchen is quite boring.

Houzz was a wealth of info and photos when completing our cottage addition/reno to become our home. Also @JanMoyer has been such an inspiration with her purging "dilemma advice" and all the others who have taken the time to chime in. It has taken 2 years to combine the contents of two residences into one. And Jan has been the encouragement to complete the task. Houzz has become like friends, some I agree with, some I don't. And in this northern Ontario snowy landscape, having "friends" is wonderful. Take the advice, filter it or pitch it. Your decision.

Houzz tip: It is still best on a laptop. Avoids the ad bombardment, you can edit your questions and posts to something that contains punctuation and actually makes sense!. It's far less likely to result in triple and quadruple posting, and as with almost all sites, it is far more user friendly in general. Nothing against amusing yourself while at the dentist or doctor, but I do detest the app. : )
