Based on what you're saying, I would ask you to consider doing the kitchen first - painted cabinets, new countertop, updated hardware, and floors would run you about $2,000 and would make a bigger impact than your livingroom.

That said, I'll also answer your original question. I went to PotteryBarn.com and threw together a few items. Remember that warm colors will make a space feel smaller and cool colors will make it feel bigger. I picked Behr Dayflower because everyone's doing gray right now, I thought it would be nice to do a grayish blue to keep it from feeling too generic. Obviously you could switch out any of this for something you like more, but this is just one option:

If you are planning on redoing the kitchen flooring as well, you MIGHT want to purchase ENOUGH of the sitting room flooring to finish the kitchen as well. The reason: most man made flooring has a shelf life of 18-24 months...Yep. In 2 years you won't find it any more. Then you will have an issue with having too many types of floors.

If you want the floor in the kitchen/sitting room to be continuous, then purchase enough to finish it all + 15%-20% extra for future repairs. And you will want to work with something like vinyl planks/tiles that will work in kitchens.

You can put the kitchen stuff in storage for the next few years and pull it out when the kitchen is remodeled.

Choose a floor that you LOVE...NOT one that suits today's kitchen! You will be stuck in the same colour palette you have right now which is exactly what you want to AVOID. You want a floor that will work with "tomorrow's" kitchen. Which also means you need to have a few ideas about the kitchen up your sleeve/in your inspiration book before you purchase anything!

Sigh. Seems like the kitchen reno is going to dictate the sitting room reno.

Can you draw a layout of your room and post it here, along with dimensions and window openings, door openings, etc.? You'll get a lot of help that way. You don't have to spend Pottery Barn money to get a Pottery Barn look. Lots of options out there!
