if it's a thick texture, a lighter color will help, but the only way to remove it is scrape it and re-texture. I feel ya. my home had trowled stucco on the walls. like something from an adobe spanish home. thick waves you would cut your skin on if you brushed against it. sheesh. or just cut out the drywall and redo it. whichever is cheaper

nope. just try your paint over it and see what it looks like
