to remove or keep

so i have thought about removing this but before I do, any ideas how to decorate it? i lean toward traditional but would not mind a modern flare to it.

    You seem to have sufficient wall space that is enough away from the door to do something really nice. I'd remove it, purchase a new console, and put up a mirror.
