Hi,

We are doing 3-panel shaker doors throughout our townhouse (like the one in the picture). All doors and trim will be painted white. Our style is transitional, probably more formal than rustic. Our ceilings are 8 ft. and the layout is pretty open.

We are thinking of doing totally flat baseboards 5.5 inches, and totally flat casing for doors and windows 3.5 inches. We will have quarterround, but no otherwise no detail or additional corner pieces, etc.

1. Should we have the corners of the doors and windows mitred like normal, or should we lay a flat piece on the tops of the 2 side pieces on the doors and windows for a more squared off look? (like the attached picture). It would still be squared off, no overhang. Does one or the other make the ceilings look higher or have some other formal/rustic/etc effect that we are not thinking of?

2. Any thoughts or recommendations that we should do something different or have some detail with the trim generally?
