Black and white looks great w/those pine ceilings. can you do some charcoal grays, or black trim around the windows?

fluffy rugs in black and white or gray, hide rugs, white throws, walnut furniture, colorful art.

don't do a battleship gray. too drab. do a whitish gray w/the black accents and any other accent color (green/yellow, orange)

How about painting the ceiling instead? For it doesn't seem to fit with the rest. It is a very warm color and you chose cooler colors for about everything else.

That wooden (?) board with the two X's in the kitchen, is that the grey for the kitchen? I would paint the ceiling in exactly that color. Matches with the rest too. Then you can keep the walls whitish, at least in the kitchen area.

Next to the fireplace I could imagine a bold black wall. The Scandinavians are bold with dark colors! The wooden beam on the wall above the fireplace would become black as well. The way it is now, doesn't match at all with the wall tiles.

A black cupboard and/or table would complete it. Then for some color add anything bold you like, for like I said: the Scandinavians are very bold with their colors. Hard blue, screeming yellow and dark red (and obnoxious pink, even if you stated pink is not your thing) would be totally cool, especially when mixed and matched. Avoid warm hues and soft tones in your accessoires. Wrought iron might give the place the manlyhood it deserves.
