Do a google search for "narrow camp bed". They run about 30 inches wide.

I looked forever for a narrow mattress. Finally I decided to cut a memory foam queen size mattress to the size I needed. It was very easy to cut with a serrated knife. Took 10 minutes.

Just remember that such a small bed will be useless for anyone over the age of 10. You might want to skip it entirely.

I totally agree with Sophie Wheeler. I have a mattress that I cut. Posted above about it. It is for a kid. I cant imagine an adult sleeping on it. None the less I have the cut mattress in a loft area of a kids room. I also have a bench that I can move the mattress to in order to convert a twin bed to a queen size.

I think you can find some drawers and a platform to put on top for the mattress at ikea. I explored their website when I was trying to solve the exact same dilema. Ultimately I ended up building what I needed.

I have no idea how good they are, but maybe a convertible chair/bed and a dresser in the room for storage.

What is the purpose of having such an unusable bed? If this is a guest area, wouldn't a fold out twin sleeper chair be a more comfortable choice? Even an Air BnB customer expects something better than no room for your behind.

I have many visitors from Europe who need to touch down in NYC, and they – not thrashers – will all be comfortable in a narrow bed for a week at a time, or two... as I would at age 73. I don't Air BnB... not permitted in my co-op and thank God that it isn't.

Sounds like an Air BnB rental to me, and probably to your co-op as well.

You better try to fit in such a narrow spot before you finalize this. You'll roll off and break something trying to roll over. Even a twin bed is pretty narrow for an adult.

" Touching down" is midnight to six am or a wicked snow storm shelter.........a week or two is a decent bed. At least a twin Aero bed you can deflate and store in a bag. Try that thirty inch piece of foam yourself, for even ONE night. My bet is unless you''re dead drunk......you crawl back in your OWN bed by two am

Amen, jansgirl. For all of you who say 30" is too narrow, I wish to point out that a queen-size bed is only 60" wide. That's only 30" inches per person. Does anyone sharing a queen bed regularly roll out of bed or push your partner onto the floor?

Yes. Thus the king sized was acquired. A twin is too short for single sleeping as well. Endurable for a night, but that's it. If there are only queen beds available in any hotel, I make sure to get the room with dual queen beds and each of us has one.

Thirty inches is the width of a CRIB. The federal government states a crib mattress be NO less than 27 1/4 wide. For a BABY!! What else must we know? This is the sole reason antique double, full size, and queen size beds do not usually suit couples, and thus the King was born. This gives each human a long length TWIN and 39/80 inches. Humans are larger than 200 years ago, and we have heat in homes rendering the cuddle for survival unnecessary. Comfort is. Unless you sleep like a drunk and narrow sardine.......bigger is better.

Jan Moyer - My husband and I shared a double bed for 25 years and neither of us slept like a drunk or sardine. We even had a kid now and then crawl in with us. We finally moved up to a queen but find the kings we use on vacation are too big for us. He's 5'11" and 195lbs so not a sardine. I've slept on couches that had thick back cushions when I've crashed at someone's house. No biggie.

Post did take an odd turn. I shared a double bed with my sister for over 15 years. My girlfriend had to sleep with her grandmother for over 20 years on a 3/4 feather bed. We all survived, slept every night without falling out and did not end up with sleeping disorders or bad backs. Perhaps what is ideal for some is not possible for others and we make due/become content with what we have. Having the set up the poster is looking to create can accommodate decent sleeping + storage + a sitting area when guests are not visiting. Sounds like a good plan to me.

I sleep on a 24 inch wide bed. Its plenty wide for me and my beagle. It's causing no new back conditions and my butt stays warm. It's a home built rope bed with a long fiber filled pillow for the mattress. I'm 46 :) What the OP is doing sounds perfectly fine to me, too.

Glad I found this post. Great ideas, I need to have a small office fit a bed. For temporary situations as needed. But look like a couch during the day. The depth of the couch/or width of sleeping area cannot be more than 30” max. Length max is 80”. It’s good for kids to sit in the office with me, nap or whatever. So many options now I never considered. There are nice futons too! But I’d like storage to put a blanket and pillow and sheets in.

I live in a very small house and needed to squeeze in a small sleeping option to use occasionally. I already had one of those fold down metal frames in storage. It was for a queen size mattress and came in two halves. So I used one half which gave me a frame that was 30 x 80 inches, since queens are 60x80. I then ordered a 5 inch medium firm poly foam slab for it from a foam seller on eBay, and topped it with an “egg-crate” polyfoam topper for added softness. (It was a queen topper which I cut in half) The frame was about $100 on Overstock or Amazon, but I just saw one on sale in Walmart online for $50. The foam mattress slab was about $80, and the topper was cheap at walmart...under $20 I think. I would imagine if you dig enough online you could find a 30 inch wide cot mattress, but not sure if it would be 80 long. Also, you can find some odd size trucker mattresses online made of memory foam layers or other materials. I actually found a 30x80 mattress protector which was being sold on a truck mattress sight, so they must have had 30x80 mattresses too. You probably could get a place that sold memory foam or latex to cut a slab to the size and thickness you wanted also. As far as under bed storage I believe that there are places that sell boxes or covered drawers that slide under the mattress frame. My frame is 14” high. Also if you have a little more than 30 inches in width available, I saw that Charles Rogers sells daybeds in two widths, the narrower being 33 inches. And they sell mattresses to fit. So there are lots of options. Ok, good luck everyone!

We have an American Leather sleeper chair that is cot sized, and while it is not what I would want to sleep on all the time, it’s perfectly acceptable for a couple of nights solo. (I would much prefer at least a twin for our longer term guests, but our longer term guests stay for a couple of weeks to a month often, using our place as a base to visit other friends and family in the US. So we try to have our guest room be very comfortable and restful.)

I also wanted to mention that there is a place online called Gothic Cabinet Craft. They sell nice solid wood captains beds with built in storage drawers. They offer standard sizes, but they will also do custom work, so I think that they could make a narrower captains bed if needed. I’m not sure of the price for the custom work or the shipping though. They also have showrooms on Long Island and in the NY Metro area. My friend purchased a bookshelf from them recently that was nicely made and sturdy, and delivered in one piece. We live in their local delivery area, so I again, I’m not sure how the delivery charges are for outside the area, but I wanted to mention them as they might be an option for some.

Anyone looking for a small mattress should look into RV or semi truck sleeper cab beds. They vary in size but are usually around 30 x 80.

I've slept on plenty of super narrow beds in various places over the years of traveling. Not ideal, but no major issues.

So many overweight Americans that wouldn't fit on this but for anybody who is fit and taken care of their body, 30" mattress should be fine. Americans are so entitled. Most people from around the world would be thankful for a cozy spot for some shut eye. i just found a place that makes a narrow daybed, for a 30” wide mattress. They call it cot size day bed. They have several styles. One is mission. Their name is Nomad Furniture and i believe that they are in New Mexico. I just received a list of their online retailers. They also sell slide out detached under bed storage drawers to match the frame‘s wood.

• I am not sure which mattress would give you the feel that you are looking for, but you can find a lot of into on Themattressunderground.com. There is much to be found on there about buying a manufactured mattress, and also much about doing a DIY mattress.
• i ended up experimenting and made my own mattress. I finally got a combo of layers that I find very comfortable for bad back and hips. I’ve got as a base 5” medium firm poly foam, followed by 2” of medium memory foam, then 2 inch medium latex, and topped with a 3” convoluted memory foam topper.
• Everyone has different feel for comfort. Making your own mattress can be fun. It sometimes costs less than a manufactured one, but it can also cost more if you have to keep experimenting and buying layers.
• i do think that it is interesting to read posted questions and answers on that site. And it’s nice to be able to ask your own questions too,

Oh, I understand your problem because I have a small bedroom in my new apartment. I knew that european beds are usually narrowed but couldn't find anything proper here in Australia.

You know, it's really strange that we don't have enough narrow beds to choose here. However, I was lucky to buy a really nice bed last year. It is very comfortable, strong and has a beautiful design. It has a walnut oak colored bed base that fits perfectly with the bedroom set I recently bought. Lucky for me, it was not that expensive and I didn't spend a lot of money for it. Interestingly, my sleep also changed for the better. That fact makes me happy because for several years I didn't know what a good sleep is.

Try a massage table, in your case NOT a portable one. They are typically 30" wide and well padded and comfy enough to fall sleep on while getting a massage. If it's not soft enough, just add a mattress cover or extra blankets. Or buy a pad that is specifically made for massage tables. Some have built in cabinets. They are adjustable in height. Normal twin size sheets fit. (I used to be a massage therapist, so I know all about those massage tables and how to make them extra comfy!)

I spent years sleeping in old military bunk beds. 30" wide. If the soldiers could sleep in 30" mattress, so can guests for a night or two. Do a search for military bed mattress. They are available new.

I know this is an old post, but if anyone is in a small space and looking for temporary sleeping solutions for overnight guests IKEA makes an ottoman in their Vallentuna line that folds out into a 32x79 inch bed. Easier to put together than most ikea furniture.
