Another 'Skylands' question

I know the forum is full of questions concerning Picea orientalis 'Skylands', so I apologize for yet another one.

I received an early "surprise" birthday present yesterday; a very small 'Skylands'. I'm not sure the exact age of the little guy, but the man who sold it to my brother said the sap riser needed to be left intact for at least another year.

I don't currently have a place picked out for it in the yard, and maybe it shouldn't even be planted out while still so fragile (assuming it is fragile, I'm sure many of you can tell me), regardless, it will probably have to stay in a pot for a while. The man who it was purchased from said "it can be moved up to a 3 gal at anytime", so I may do that soon. Basically, I am looking for advice on how to keep this little guy happy in a pot for however long need be. I assume the 50:50 peat:perlite mix would be okay. I'm not using the 5:1:1 mix, as i will not be able to check it every single day.

Sorry for the rambling.

Thanks,

Kyle
