Teal and greens are back! Choose colors that go with that green tile. maybe paint the cabinets a dark color, like an espresso and a black. Reds and yellows would nice in there too. Paint the walls and the cabinets and you should be ok! You can upgrade the towel bars and the shower head and the faucets if you want a "newer" look. Looking forward to seeing the after pictures too!

I'd add (if you can squeeze it in to the budget) to replace the light fixture over the vanity with something a bit more powerful. I can't see what's there now but the room feels a little on the dark side to me.

Can't tell if your walls and other surfaces are cream or white. With the powerful mint green, I strongly recommend a pure, icy white with no hint of warmth or cream in it. The icy white makes the mint look fresh and hip (whereas yellowed/creamy tones make it look tired and sad). Towels and accessories should be bright white, possibly with black accents. This will make a huge difference!

I love the suggestions (pure white and black). What fun - I wouldn't change the tile even if it was in the budget. Maybe once you've got white and black basics, pop in a very bright orange or yellow in art or small accessories.

Hey the actual bathroom isn't so bad...you can paint the tiles a more neutral color and get nice accessories.....urban outfitters have really pretty shower curtains(ruffled one) and the same in a rug....those accessories are neutral and pretty but at the same time youthful.

Please don't paint the tile.

Don't pain the tile, do paint the toilet seat and lid to match the bowl (take the tank lid to a paint store or dept. to match color. Search internet for "painting toilet seats" for instructions). If you want to keep the bath more juvenile, keep the shower curtain and use it for the inspiration piece. Pull colors from it for accessories, I'd chose different scatter rugs, and towels.

Great bath Laura! Paint the wall a crisp white then mask off 9"stripes to paint a teal to match the tiles. Use a matt/eggshell finish so it is easy to wipe off. I would stay with Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Wms. Paint. Use a crisp white textured shower curtain. Update lighting. Does mirror need update too? Keep vanity crisp white and update hardware, faucet, where needed. Hang a large framed piece of the kids artwork above the towel bars. This is an easy re-do with minimal effort/$$. Enjoy!

I had that same color tile in my rental bathroom (so, obviously, no ripping out the tile). I loved the vintage-ness of it, but I had to adjust to the color. I completely agree that the best way to make this tile look good is pure white. Sadly, I couldn't paint the hideous dirty-beige color the dumb landlords had picked for my bathroom, but every single white element I could put in there, I did, and I think it worked well. White towels; white bath mat; white shower curtain. LOTS of white. (I would definitely go for a solid white shower curtain instead of the owls.) I don't know whether any changes are in the budget other than paint, but here's what I would consider: (1) retro black and white tile for the floor - something like this: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/SomerTile-12.25x12.25-in-New-York-1x2-in-Black-White-Spiral-Porcelain-Mosaic-Tile-Pack-of-10/4188364/product.html. I love hex tile, but I think it actually hails from an era slightly before your bathroom, so I would think the spiral/pinwheel style would fit in better. And (2) replacing the vanity. I don't think there's any getting around the fact that the vanity dates from much later than the wall tile, and seems to be particle-board or something. What about a vintage pedestal sink (like the one Genevieve featured - you can usually find them on craigslist) and a set of (white, of course) drawers next to it for storage? And I can't see your mirror, but find something deco if at all possible.

Embrace the tile and go mod-fun-kid. I would have fun with the greens and make it a cool kids bath. No need to make it into something different until they hit their teens.
