How often...........?

Over at the Bathroom Forum someone was "skeveed" taking a shower where the shower curtain was only taken down and washed/disinfected weekly or less often. I am sure she meant the liner. So my question, if you have a shower curtain and liner how often do you wash/disinfect your shower curtain and liner. I will be honest, I wash it only when I feel it needs it and usually I just replace the liner. I do spray it down with daily shower spray and a bleach water mixture once or twice a week.

Funny you should post this as I was thinking the same thing today!

I actually take the liner down and disinfect in the washer every 1-2 weeks. In the summer, it has to be once a week because it has a tendency to not dry as fast. This is one of those cloth like shower liners and not the vinyl ones.

Does that person live where the curtain doesn't dry and gets moldy? How often does she change her sheets, I wonder?

I've never had a curtain of my own--always glass doors--but..what's the big deal? Unlike sheets, one isn't getting body soil on it...just soap scum and a little spray that bounces off one onto the curtain. Unless maybe she's a wildcatter, coal miner or grease monkey, and the dirt is getting just everywhere? Isn't drying the curtain out daily more important than washing it for eliminating itinerant micro-organisms?

Thing is mold grows quickly on shower liners...I wash mine daily.

HAHAHA got ya....of course I don't wash it daily but I figured some of you might think I do....Heather every few weeks is probably fine unless you see something growing on it. I'd also be curious how often the skeveed person washes their sheets. it would be just like someone like that to think a shower liner is nasty in a week but washes their bedding every few months lol

Weekly or every few weeks Heather should be fine.

Honestly I wash mine when I notice it needs it. I have a glass door on my shower, but my kids have a curtain. I have drilled it in their heads to always close the curtain after they get out of the shower so it won't be bunched up and attract mildew. I also spray it down with Lysol when the bathroom is cleaned.

Wash it only when it shows signs of soiling. Shower curtain not so often. I change them seasonally, so I usually wash at that time. The liners are inexpensive, so I dont keep them around all that long.

I truly was not worried if my routine maintenance was to little. I am often surprised by what others find too dirty or germy. I have few fears of germs or dirt. Sometimes I wonder what other think make a clean and safe home. I have a shoes off home, wash my sheets weekly in hot water and I always wash my hands after using the bathroom. I believe that a fresh bleach water solution is the best for disinfecting in a home. I also live in a world of microbes and just don't worry too much. I have friends who think I am a bit of a clean freak and others who think I am not clean enough. I am not judging, just find the world a wonderful place full of differences.

I wash the liner every two weeks or so, otherwise I find buildup of pink slime. I'm not worried about the bacteria, but pink on white bothers me! Delicate cycle, on warm, and about 4 minutes in the dryer, and then back up on the hooks (with the bathroom vent fan on).

Moen sells double hooks so that taking it on and off is easy! Moen Double Shower Curtain hooks

@julie... Same here with the pink, by that time it'll usually start to smell too! Always had this issue with the fabric type liners, they take forever to dry. Another trick I noticed in hotels was sometimes they leave the backs of the hooks undone, makes taking the liner on/off very easy.

I wash it when I notice it needs it. I have a central exhaust system that works in all the bathrooms so it exhausts all bathrooms whenever any bathroom is used so I don't have a constant mold problem. I don't have a liner just a fabric curtains. So how about once every 3 months maybe if that.

When I do wash it I just use very warm water and detergent, 1 wash 2 rinses then I hang it in the shower to dry.

For the other bathrooms I do the same thing since no liners are used in them either. I think the plastic liners just make more of a mess and breed more mold than just using a fabric curtain.

I don't have a liner either, for that same reason, Jerrod. My shower curtain is such that it does not let water escape. I use lots of FS when washing it to keep it that way. Wash it maybe every 2 months. Found it on Vermont Country Store website.

Anybody know of shower hooks that are longer that the Moen posted above? My bathroom renovator surely was standing on his head when he installed the rod.

We wash ours when it starts to either give off a musty odor, or has visible soiling. Typically once every month. I'm trying to find method daily shower spray in ylang ylang scent, the mint eucalyptus stinks.

Pat not a pretty look, but once I had a pole that was too high and I hung a second set of hooks to the first on to make it longer. It worked.

A question to those who use fabric curtains: Do they leak water? Blow in to the shower?

    heather, thank you!

Hmorton, I have a fabric curtain and fabric liner in my new bath. It neither leaks nor blows into the shower. I've only taken five showers there so far (not yet really moved in). But I'd think I'd notice...

I've also wondered about the curtain no plastic liner if it leaks out. Or gets blown in. How often a liner needs washed also probably depends on household size. 5 of us and mine needs washed every 2 weeks. I have been buying the really cheap 1$ ones from the dollar tree so I toss it which costs me 2$ a month. I've done this since I got my Duet. I'm not comfortable putting it in a FL'er.

I wash mine every 2-3 months, I would say. Soft water, home made soaps, and the liner is pulled across so that it dries out. I rarely even get mold on the thing. I buy those cheap plastic ones to line the inside with and a cloth on the outside, but I wash the plastic one until they tear. 120 or 140 degree wash with towels or something, and done!

Ditto. I don't currently have any shower curtains, but in previous houses we always leave the curtain pulled to full length after showering, so they don't hold in bits of water here and there, and mold doesn't accumulate.

I plan to use a shower curtain on our walk-in shower in our new house ... and that door's going to be 36" wide, so it won't "spread out" wide enough for this system to work. I guess I'll end up cutting down a shower curtain.
