Looks appropriate. It'll be brighter this way as opposed to spread out the length of the counter.

This is task lighting: if you have adequate light to work by, they are fine. Your space looks like it will be lovely when done.

3 lights look good evenly spaced. 2 lights however look stupid evenly spaced across countertop area. The distance between the 2 lights should be 1.6X the distance from the corner of island (or wall) to the light.

Lights look fabulous centered/clustered over the island rather than evenly spaced across the whole island. Think of the pendants like a piece of art which you would not want dot-dot-dot spaced over the entire length.

I must disagree. That particular arrangement is fine for an area designated to eating only, but is completely inappropriate to a work station. This island contains part of the kitchen's work triangle, and should be treated accordingly.

It looks like the electrician placed the first light in the center and then split the remaining spaces in half again. I feel the weight of the fixture grouping is not in balance with the size of the island and the illumination will not be consistent on either side of the sink where you will be doing food prep tasks

When an island contains a major task area, I start by dividing the overall space by three, place the center light and then work from the center out with the one-third dimension. I then ask the electrician to hold up the fixture because its size/bulk can have an impact on spacing as well. It also helps in determining height off the counter. This approach assures consistent lighting throughout the task area.

How is the lighting functioning for you now? If it isn't "falling off" enough to impact your task area then the only reason to move the lights would be aesthetic and as you can see here, there is more than one thought on the subject.

They are pretty well spaced. At most the outer lights would move to the outside just a couple of inches to be centered over work surface but certainly nothing to obsess about. Definitely not spread from end to end of the counter.

Sure, could have been a couple of inches further out, but you're FINE. This looks great. Were the junction boxes in the ceiling placed long ago, before sheetrock? Your electrician might have a good defense if the hanging points were visible a while back... This is a good reason to walk the rough-in electrical very early in the job. Not sure what the overall scope was here. Still sticking with "totally acceptable" on these locations.

Everyone - Thank you So Much for all the opinion! I feel much better now. I don't really "cook", the kitchen is used for casual entertaining and just hanging out, so task lighting is not a huge issue, I just wanted to make sure it Looked okay. Yes there is a banquette to the right in the little nook area. Nice try Y&B but No, the junction boxes were not already in place - I was not sure what size the island would end up being, so I specifically had him leave plenty of extra looped wiring in the ceiling for this very reason. He did get the height within an inch of where I wanted them, I will give credit for that. Pretty much everyone says they look ok, so its not worth running the risk of what all would get messed up and what it would cost, and delaying the finish date, just to move them a little. Thanks again !

The electrician probably hung them where the studs were so there was a place to attach the junction box. If the ceiling is already in it would be difficult to place a light in-between studs there needs to be something to nail it to.
