can I build a patio without wood deck and without cement?

I have part shade/part sun next to my house where I have a built in grill deck (rotted).
I would like to replace it with something at ground level that could house a grill, a bench and a granite slab to use for cooking and cutting.
I don't particularly want wood (splinters/maintenance), or concrete slab (cold), or any more major construction is there a way to get this done on a budget with pebble and cement or pebble and stone?

It sounds like you have a budget in mind and considering you mentioned "cold" I'll assume you don't live in Arizona! That way you can kind of see how much things will cost as you shop around and look into the different ideas you're going to be getting.

There are pre-built Trex-type squares that imitate wood decks. I am not sure they would support a granite slab on top of whatever you intend to put it on.

I am sure there is an economical solution to your question. It would be benefical to post a couple of photos of the area as well as the surroundings. You may also want to consider consulting a local landscape designer/architect.

You could do a decomposed granite/breeze/crusher fines patio. It's basically tiny rocks and Rick dust that create a firm surface.

Is your deck area sloped and/or does it have a large amount of rain water crossing it? We don't use decomposed granite unless it is almost flat with minimal water running across it and we can contain in a boundry of rock, brick or other edging. What about sand set flagstone?
