You might think about doing a cream color for the cabinets. White may be too stark for that bright a green. Is changing your counter tops in your plan? Formica and Wilsonart are affordable and come in a multitude of colors and materials. A bright patterned rug on the floor would tie the room together.

Also, lose the curtain for the w/d area. If they're white, it goes with the other appliances. If you're hiding clothes or detergent, install wire shelves above the w/d.

White cabinets would be a wonderful contrast to the bright green and would make the space look clean and bright.

@ colonialgp I would do cream, in fact thats what I've always wanted but I've been looking at pictures with cream cabinets and white appliances and I just don't care for it much. Down the road I would like to change out the countertop. They are laminate and well, nuff said. I love the idea of a rug. Where would you put it and what size? Also in terms of backsplash and countertops, which comes first? I'd assume the countertops correct? I can probably only do one at a time. If I lose the curtain, what color should I paint the laundry closet. Its not very attractive. Or maybe a hanging door, plantations shutter doors? There's a whole lot of wasted space in the corner of that laundry area that I just don't know what to do with. I'm going to start looking at countertops now

@Catalano I was thinking the same thing about the white and the green.

If you are handy you can get two 6 panel doors from Home Depot for about 18.00 each. Put them in using a large stop at the header and a magnet closure on the stop. You'll need 4 hinges and just regular pulls. Then paint with a white semi-gloss. That would do wonders.

Okay, so... as much as I like bold colour choices (I really do), this is a bit too much green. It just makes the kitchen feel very dark to me. I'd much rather see the dining set painted in this green, the kitchen cabinets white to match the appliances, the walls a fresh light aqua and one accent wall with a funky wallpaper or paint colour.
Chrome or stainless steel hardware I think. And perhaps orange, green and aqua tiles for the backsplash or some other colourful accents. But less green will definitely have more impact :-)

Look at the fish tank the blck is stunning with the apple green ,so I would paint the cupboards blck and when you get your new stainless steel appliances your kitchen will be completed.. if you can :) replace the floor in a black and white tile

Lower your light fixture to about 30" above your table. The white glass shades will help integrate your white appliances/cream walls.

Work a little bit in your laundry area and make every inch usable. Paint it your apple green and make it seem like it's just part of the room [like your stove, fridge,etc. are]. 2 new coated wire shelves above the w/d and in the open space to the left of the washer. Or you could get a more industrial shelving unit next to the washer and facing it and hang a curtain to hide stuff on that shelving unit.

No curtain facing the kitchen, which means that all of your laundering products would need to be out of sight - in good baskets, for example. Down the line you could have a cabinet built that would match your kitchen cabinets that would go over the w/d and make the nook look even more a part of the kitchen as a whole.

If you like the black / white combo that Genevive sent you, look for a b/w rug for your kitchen. Make sure it is big enough! Probably need an 8' x 10'.

I agree with mich. Here is an ideabook on working with apple green. If you don't install folding doors over your laundry, I would consider a white curtain with a geometric or wide stripe that is hung closer to the top of the closet and just skims the floor. In terms of order, it seems that you would do counter prior to backsplash, but if you are intending to replace cabinets you may not be able to salvage your new counter. So I think it depends on the long term plan.

Hi---yes, I have to agree with several that the wall color is too saturated. Since you have to work with what you have, I suggest painting the walls a soft aqua/gray hue and adding accessories that are lime, gray, silver, and aqua in color. I think if you changed the wall color you could postpone painting the cabinets until you replace the countertop. Pics for inspiration. Good Luck!

Hello. I would say enjoy your green walls since that color was your first choice. You can always sponge a lighter color green over your existing darker green sometime in the future if you wish. Proceed by painting the cupboards white or off white. Buy yourself a new curtain and table cloth and see how the room looks. I bet it will look beautiful.

It's not the cabinets, its your colors that bother me, they don't match the style or the wood. The color combination- vibrant green and exotic blue seems like lovely, tropical combination, but it's just like buying a printed dress on the beach in Mexico, it never works when you get it home. If you don't want to repaint cabinets, I would just get rid of one of those colors and make the other a star. A mellow grey or crisp white would go nicely as a replacement, I think.

f you do want to paint cabinets, I agree with most comments: white is the best choice. ( Cloud White from Benjamin Moor worked wonderful for me to match white appliances). But remember: you will still have the wood table/chairs that would look really out of place then, unless you are painting them too.

If you don't' want white, I'd pull a color from your counter tops, but stay on the grey, not brown side; the value should be about the same as the countertops. Appliances will stand out in this case, but they would not fight it, as long as add some more white through the space. Your cabinets will dissapear and your blue/green/white combo will be most prominent . You'd have to paint table, chairs as well, or replace them. There are few choices to do it easily: there is a stain/poly combination that goes on finished wood; it requires only light sending, not stripping, it comes in many colors, available in Home Depot.

Hi! Yup I agree with a lot of the earlier comments that the green is too intense to be so widely used. It works really well as an accent colour but this expanse makes it overwhelming. If it can't be changed however , I would think going completely overboard with the Mexican theme is a good idea. Paint bright murals on some plain surfaces...maybe on the white cabinets you are planning! Paint the chairs like the ones in this picture. Add a bright cotton rug. Add a patchwork hanging, or cushions on that or a few bright tiles stuck on your painted cabinets. Add a cactus in a terra cotta pot. Use bright crockery. Are the woods of the cabinets and the table matching? If they are, you can paint the lower cabinets black to tie in with the fish tank and keep the upper cabinets wood but make them glass fronted so it lightens up the space.
Although you may be buying new countertops before the backsplash you can still look for ideas and how to incorporate it into your budget. A glass mosaic backsplash would be beautiful Bc the green can still be seen but its color will be softened, and it'll reflect light. I would also place under cabinet lighting on the upper cabinets to illuminate your workspace

Do you have pictures of the kitchen of the placement of the appliances?

I would suggest a terracotta tone, which would create an earthy palette with your parquet floors, wood cabinetry, your current countertops etc. All you need to finish the motif would be your upgraded appliances in Stainless Steel and some Acorn (brand) iron or brushed metal earthy hardware.

Keep your permanent things neutral...white cabinets for sure. When you get tired of the green you won't have to worry about matching a colored cabinet.

I would agree with carolins and mich. You're colors are too overpowering, and you have too many of them playing right now. The white/cream cabinets would be a huge improvement, but I think you need some more changes. I like the idea of either painting a lighter green (but still bright and playful) as michagammemom suggested. I think lighter walls, and incorporating pops of that bold lime green would look great. It's just too strong for your walls, but using it in tablecloths, kitchen linens, curtains, backsplash tiles or wallpaper on an accent wall would be great.

Try something like this photo - lighter green walls, white/cream cabinets, and a bright green backsplash. [houzz=] You could easily accent it with a green table (you could even use stencils to create a green and white design on the table) and green linens. But I would restrict your color scheme to 3 colors - white, green, and gray - and just vary the shades of each color. It will give your kitchen a lot more unity.

I agree with others that you may want to repaint your table and chairs if you paint all the cabinets white - it goes back to reducing your colors.

As far as your closet, plantation shutters would look great, or some kind of folding door. For the "wasted space," you could do several things. You could add shelves and keep your cleaning supplies/linens there. Essentially, it could give you a new linen closet that would free up storage in other rooms. Or you could install a hanging bar there (consider an adjustable curtain rod) and use it for hanging clean clothes as you pull them out of the dryer. It's nice to have hanging space, but you'll have to consider whether it's easy to remove hanging items from that space, or if it's an awkward angle. [houzz=]

With the laundry area, I would also suggest replacing the shelf above the machines. It seems to be bowing out in the photo you posted anyway. I'd recommend adding two floating shelves. It will increase your storage space, and it will make that wall space seem less empty above the washer/dryer.

If you opt for hanging clothes space, stagger the shelves toward the right side of the closet, rather than having them directly above one another. That will increase your mobility for removing hanging clothes when you go to take them out of your laundry area. [houzz=]

I painted my honey oak cupboards with Benjamin Moore Cloud White (Aura - semi gloss). It's a warm white - not cream. Painting cabinets is a lot of work, so you don't want to be doing it over and over. I think that would look stunning as well as tone down the brightness of your green walls. It also works well with white appliances (I know - I have them!). Keeping your cupboards a neutral colour allows you a lot of freedom to create the look you want. I fought with co-ordinating paint colours to my honey oak for 20 yrs. Now that my cabinets are white, I almost feel liberated! Good luck with your project - it'll be an amazing transformation!

With any saturated wall color - you'll need lots of light. I would suggest installing recessed lighting and maybe some pendents or even a chandelier. Have you thought about doing a backsplash? There are tons of really awesome glass designs where you can incorporate the green into the design and continue to brighten up the space. My suggestion would be to try and keep everything else neutral with little pops of color (including the green) so it all makes sense. (think kitchen linens, utensil crocks) Same goes with artwork. There are bound to be some great pieces out there - or you can always make your own! I think black and white photos with a large white mat and thin black frame, would look pretty.

Always start with the most basic design principles. You have a lot of visual noise in the room, and it's not the bright paint.

1 - Keep the green walls just the way they are. You'll feel differently about it once the stuff below works itself out.

2 - Tackle the first issue: Countertops. Rust-Oleum Countertop restoration kit ( http://countertops.rustoleumtransformations.com/kit-contents.php) can completely transform your existing surface for a few dollars. I have used it myself and it is remarkably strong and durable - perfect temporary solution. The previous owners of my home literally put a stained plywood counter down in our kitchen which was split and water damaged. Rust-Oleum kit bridged us till we could get marble counters a few years later. It is strong industrial grade stuff, so you'll live with fumes for a week or so. A range of colors. You can use any kind of cleaner on it once it cures. I easily did it myself in one night. You will feel SO much better once this is taken care of. A black would be great with green wall, white cabinets/appliances, and black&white checkerboard floor.

3 - Floor: Consider Flor custom tiles found at www.flor.com to cover most of your kitchen floor. A black and white checker board would be be fun. Or neutral color in a jute texture. Any carpet tile that gets damaged can easily be replaced, so just keep a couple on hand. They make them for kitchens as well and start at $8 per 12x12 tile.You could also do a checkerboard with floor paint, or some subtle stencil design. Plus you can change your mind. You can also find them cheaper on eBay.

4 - Paint cabinets and dining table a clean, neutral white. Warm whites will conflict with appliances (I get your concern - that would drive me insane too). Only way to tell is to sample a few colors of paint on big foam boards (the kind you'd use for a kid project poster). Prop it up where it would go to see light differences/undertones throughout day. Remember the rule ... "a color is only a color next to another color". So test it first. 5. Paint chairs a very glossy black to pull in black counters.

We have recently re-done our 168 yr. old kitchen in a medium grey with just off white toppers to brighten it up. We love it. Our cupboards are solid cherry so painting them is out of the question. Green happens to be my favourite colour but I think your choice is just a bit too bright for the room. I also love green and turquoise together but I think your laundry room area would look better and more finished if you had white bifold doors on it. Your floor is also dark so I think you need enough of a much lighter colour to balance it properly. If you are unable to paint table and chairs to an off white then you need to balance the deeper green colour with enough of a lighter colour. it would make your room appear larger and brighter obviously. We also removed the globes from our light fixtures and added antique mason jars instead to add some "bling" as they now call it. Because of the fireplace wall in the one end of the kitchen we are limited colourwise so have opted this time to the gray colour which we love.

Hello Erica: I read enough posts to get the gist of suggestions.

1. The green you chose is a fun color, but too dark and too intense. I would tone that down, because after you paint your cabinets, it's the look is going to be too harsh and stark.

2. Your floor is very dark. If you can possibly afford to change this, that would be a huge improvement. There's vinyl tile and linoleum at Home Depot that's really quite nice and affordable, since you're on a budget.

3. I'm not a fan of curtains in the kitchen. They get dirty from cooking fumes, and they just don't belong in a kitchen. The louver door is a good solution and not expensive to do. The space left of the washer is hard to reach for just about anything. You could put two small shelves, and then add a hook organizer to hang your mop and broom.

4. Countertops - these are dark also, and it would be a worthwhile investment to get new. Ikea has really good counter tops. Check these out. Granite is expensive, even if you buy odd lots or scraps, which there's really no such thing. You can always try doing a tile counter top if that appeals to you.

5. Theme - I've traveled all over the US, Europe, the Caribbean, etc. Like one post said, something you buy in Mexico, doesn't always translate as well when you bring it back to your house in say Maine. When you consider your ktichen theme your design, you should consider your entire home, and how that kitchen is going to integrate with the rest of your space. If your whole house is transitional, your kitchen should be transitional - you can add a few little Mexican touches of color, but I wouldn't go overboard and add an adobe floor and Mexican tile back splash. I love the colors of Santa Fe, but those colors don't work in North Carolina.

I've been involved in a kitchen renovation and it can get expensive. To stay on budget, you'll need to determine what's a splurge and worth the investment and what you can substitute for now. Wait on the counter until you have the cabinets painted. You might find that it looks much better against the cream cabinets. New hardware for the cabs is a must though, this will help them to look great. Loose the doors on the cab on the right and leave it as an open shelf for displaying pretty things. I have read all the comments and so many good ideas but on a budget is rough. Keep everything simple and on the budget track. I would use a soft white that isn't too bright and stark. Make the white your basic color and go from there as money allows.
