I think slate would look pretty good, but I'd consider going a little darker because of the black shutters. Here are a couple styles of doors that I like and think would look nice on your home (I'm not a fan of half or full light kits on doors, mainly for security reasons):

Or simply install an unfinished Fiber Glass door and you can change the color as much as you like until you find the right look, these would be a solid solution if you plan to hang and finish the door yourself.

Congratulations on your newly renovated roof, the Shakewood shingles look very beautiful. Regarding your questions, I agree on adding a splash of color to the facade to bright up the entrance, like a bold red. You could incorporate the glass insert in the door design, like in the photos below, it won't compete with the oval top window.

I remember Kelly Hoppen commenting on the striking effect of a black door ... and haven't looked black. It's sophisticated, stunning and makes an impactful first impression. The bonus ... those black shutters will have new life.

When you paint the front door, you might consider painting the garage door the same color. Looks as if you have a nice, standard colonial entry door. Do you want to add a window for light?

Atelier Armbruster I love the examples that you posted and had actually priced the second door, as I like the six panel door and thought those two glass inserts was a step up. I question myself on that though, as I have seen solid 6 panel doors dressed up nicely (paint, knocker, handle) that look beautiful.

Lynne Mysliwiec I like the standard 6 panel door, when they are dressed up nicely (paint, door knocker, handle). I really don't need more light in that area, as I already have the oval window above the door. I just started remodeling after 25 years and thought that a door with glass inserts would not only add to my curb appeal, but would make the interior look a lot less boring! Of course, this added interest cost $$$!
