Why has my kitty lost his voice?

My kitty seems to have lost his voice. When he meows almost nothing comes out. He otherwise seems to be his same healthy self. I don't know his age since he was a stray. And I remember my last kitty lost his voice when he got really old. But I recalled his voice going away slowly where my with my current kitty, it seemed to happen overnight and he doesn't seem that old. Does anyone have any thoughts on why this is?
