The mirror is beautiful, but you have to consider what ends up being reflected in it. I think the ceiling reflected in it would bother me (and I think it bothers you!). Is there another place you could use that beautiful mirror?

Yes it is bothering me. I think I'll see if I can tilt it a bit or something to change the reflection. Maybe I'll use it over the dresser in my bedroom if it doesn't work over the fireplace.

i like it. but i think it probably doesnt belong, or it would look better empty or with something not as big. it makes the ceiling look small and the round shape clashes with the bold square shape of the Fireplace.

I think the mirror would be perfect over a dresser! You really don't need to hang anything in that space. I'd try playing with some different mantel arrangements - maybe even incorporate a small mirror (around 8.5 x 11) into the mix. You can change it with the seasons.

Jenny, it's a great mirror but needs another location. With all the brick, I think you should keep any decor on/around the mantel and hearth fairly simple. That includes the fireplace screen...no pattern would be better with the brick. I've dealt with this myself...we have a large brick fireplace in our family room. Less is totally much more.

It's not a dust ruffle, I think she has small children and wants to prevent them getting a head injury.

I think you've done a charming job with the mix here. I like how the floral embellishment at the top of the mirror aligns with the middle beam. However, I agree that the reflection of the ceiling as it is now isn't ideal. What about this idea? Wallpapered ceilings are all the rage right now. Create some more interest on that ceiling and then your mirror will have something interesting to reflect!

It might not be the right mirror for mantle but it looks kinda cottage inspired I also don't mind the flowers maybe get rid of lights on mantle it all depends on what look your going for cottage modern Rustic Do what you love but the houzzes are really good on advice

I would hang and then paint the mirror cream to relate to the mantle or paint the mantle and the mirror black to relate to the firescreen. Then try greenery in the vases and remove all the other tchotskies off the mantle....also replace the hearth cover with black the blend in with the bricks, etc. Move the floor lamp where it will function with a chair/sofa. Great room.....

One possibility....might be too country and not farmhouse but could not find any pic of flowers...wrong category I suppose..

Hello! I do not think that this mirror too big. Everything perfectly looks.

The flowers bother me more than the mirror. Get rid of the flowers first and see what it looks like. Is the mirror hung properly or just sitting there? It has potential just not there yet.

The issue I have with the mirror is that the style is different than the cottage or farmhouse style you seem to have going on otherwise. If you want a mirror there, think about replacing it with a different style.

It’s too big when the mantle is so high. And yes, it only reflects ... suboptimal elements of the room. I’m sure it will look lively elsewhere.

PS why the fabric-wrapped hearth?

Small children? Safety hazard?

1. Fabric over hearth has thick foam underneath for child proofing. It has to stay for a couple more years. Not making another one. Super expensive to purchase as it is a niche market.

2. Eventually I'm going to replace the mantle with a wood beam. I'm also thinking of painting the fireplace when I paint the whole room. If you have seen my other posts I'm first redoing my dining room. So, I was looking for just some easy decor that would look nice. I've attached some photos of what inspired me.

3. I like the modern farmhouse style and I do really like those lanterns. I think I'll see if the mirror works in my bedroom. The mirror just was delivered yesterday which is why it is leaning and not secured. Which of course would be done for safety reason.

Oh and that lamp to the side is one where they are plugged into the wall socket. I wanted to keep it for light and have been looking for a new lamp shade. Its a spider style shade with a piece that screws on the top. I'm indifferent about it.

Is the mantle placed too high? When I switch to the beam should I lower it? The screen covering the fireplace actually just reaches the top of the opening. It looks high now bc it's sitting on 3" of foam. I agree with the comment about it being plainer and not so ornate but it's on the bottom of my list of changes.

Jenny, something simple like the 3-panel screen in the photo from Susan Davis would be nice. I also like the simplicity of the mantel decor in the photo.

I like your brick and would try to work with it. You might check Pier One for lanterns. Their "Landen" lanterns are similar to Pottery Barn's "Malta" lanterns with a better price.

I would remove the lamp. It doesn't look right in that location.

I agree I hate the lamp. I'm just dealing with a lack of light problem in that room. No ceiling lights. I'll have to see what I can do.

The Mantel looks early American and the fireplace screen looks cabin. They don't sing in harmony . I would either paint the mantel or replace it. Paint it to blend more with the brick and loose the mirror and the vases with flowers. Sometimes less is more. You could put a green plant on one side of the fireplace mantel or think copper...or match the FP screen.
