The nook area is about 10'6" x 10'6". Here is the kitchen/dining/living area. The modern kitchen/dining area is the look I'm going for in the whole space.

If you wanted to try to reuse your current furniture you could paint your table black, your chairs white, and recover the chairs in a bold, funky fabric. (Or vice versa paint-wise)

thinkdesignlive - I've thought about a tulip table, but I haven't found the right combo of base and top. I thought brushed ss base, but not sure about the top. The only white in the entire space currently is the baseboard. Not sure about marble top because of all the quartzite. Also current table is 54" which may be too small? Just to mention, we don't really eat here. Sometimes I sit and watch tv and do sudoku. Maybe if we entertain, people will sit here.

drdeb - I've had this table and chairs for 14 years. All of my furniture is 14 years old and was purchased for a mediteranean tropical house. I think I'm over it. Also, maybe too small?

I'm obsessed with this RH console. Do you think it would look good where the tv is now? I'm looking for a lower modern sectional too.

Any ideas for a modern sectional? My husband's only criteria is that it be comfortable.

Everything seems a bit sterile - no color, no fabric, perhaps you could start with the windows and find a fabric that you can then build off of. I was going to say you could have a table with a chrome base and have a top made out of the same quartzite, but you have so much of it in the kitchen - wow, 3 sinks! - that it would be too much. Perhaps a more dramatic darker color - and rugs! The hardwood is beautiful but you need something to warm things up.

Thanks KR - I've really tried to find something I like for the windows, but I end up liking natural blinds which doesn't really bring in the color. Also totally private and ocean view out the back so it would just be for looks. I doubt I would every close them. Box valances don't work with my modern look. Also needs to continue into family room area.

The kitchen is very nice, however, I agree with KR - maybe a bowl of lemons or oranges on the countertops with the two sinks.....and bring in more color with a few throw rugs.

What about adding a shelf above each window, with woven baskets or something.

Definitely reuse your table and order some mcm chairs to pair with it. Add a small credenza where the painting is and get a more modern painting. Leave the windows bare. Also to add texture to the space, add in some plants and throws.

Turn your table and chairs so that the chairs are on the diagonal. It will help visually.

Do you feel strongly about keeping that as an eating space? Looks like there is a great eating area in the kitchen, already.

shirlipp - The kitchen pictures were taken before we moved in. There is a big succulent bowl on the island and one in each bay window. The beverage bar has our Keurig and an Asian carving. We have six temporary brown leather chairs. Three on each side. Plus usual kitchen stuff like knife block, paper towel stand etc. I've been looking for some brighter teal or coral pleather dining chairs for that area.

kat - I like that table a lot. I'm not sure its large enough. Its the same size as the current table. Do you think that's the right size or is 60" better?

Laury - I hadn't thought of that. That's got me thinking of hanging something up there.

westmain - I'm tired of all this furniture. I need new and more modern. The last house was so decorated. I'm ready for less is more, but I don't want it too harsh looking. Everything we own is brown. I really wanted color for this house. I like coral, blue, teal and sea glass green - beach colors. I put in a neutral base but I want to furnish with color and art.

Hi Beverly - I had the table turned, but dear hubby moved it so he could sit and eat and watch tv through the pony wall.

leslie - I don't really need the area for anything else. Once I get this decorated, we will be having some dinner parties and thought this could be additional seating if we have a larger group. We have two outdoor dining tables too. We are informal and usually have more of a serve yourself buffet style.

Since it seems like you're starting from scratch and going for a different style, maybe you should hire a designer to help.

suzyq,I love that RH piece. It's looks quite a bit bigger than what you have? if you put it there, would you have to move back the sectional?

what if you go a table in that same RH type of wood? I'm thinking like a cerused weathered oak, with maybe some steel accents or legs of some sort. Have you ever thought about doing a built in seating? or maybe a bench/settee against that wall?

I like a reclaimed wood type of table too (with a fig leaf tree!)

Val - I might have to. I worked with a good one for this remodel. Here are some before pictures. We took out the steps and combined the dining room and kitchen. I'm good at designing and finishes and remodeling, but not so great with decorating.

Hi Beth - Thanks for the great pictures. I'm getting some good ideas here. The RH console is 90". The current one is 82" but taller at 42". We have a 75" tv. So the RH would def fit without moving the sectional much. I think I need the same size sectional but with a lower back and modern vibe. The floor does have some gray in it. Do you think the RH would look okay with the stacked sandstone fireplace and floors?

Reupholstering the chairs in a splashy print would change the whole feel of the dining furniture. The chairs look comfortable, so why change them?

Maybe you could make a cardboard template of a 60" round and set it on your current table to see if the 6" makes that much difference visually. I like that there's some space around the table but you may feel differently. I'd look at West Elm for a more modern sectional. jb - Here are close ups of the chairs. They are comfortable. What if I got the table painted glossy coral or teal and got splashy reupholster? Or got a bigger top made for the existing table base? But then I'd need two more chairs. Another bonus sunset shot. Injects a little color almost every night. lol

I'm not a fan of the current neutrals, and I'm having trouble seeing the actual colors in the photos, so it is hard for me to tell you what would work while breaking out of current palate.

What colors do you like - blues, greens, reds....

How about a long glass or wood table, maybe with chairs painted an interesting deep color(s)? Or standout, maybe colored, pendant lamps?

The space needs texture. If you don't like rugs, how about a large textile on the wall? You could pull colors from it for chairs or things to put on the table. If properly mounted, tribal textiles can look quite modern (Something large gets a wide strip of Velcro sewn on the top, back. You can tack The other side of Velcro to a wooden slat or order a metal slat with Velcro attached from a site that deals with conservation supplies. Marimenko fabric is stretched over artist painters treat her strips, and tacked on the back with a staple gun).

Or an arrangement of patterned Pakistani or African baskets.

Or a long but very interesting table runner?

And overhead lighting that has texture or softness to it.

The brick and floor are warm and the console is more cool toned. But, the right rug could tie it in. Where there's a will there's a way. Lol

Thanks Lynn - no brick now and no freckled cedar. You have to scroll up to see it now. That's a before picture. The new floor has gray tones in it. The fireplace is stacked sandstone that is warm. But I thought the floor might pull the sandstone and the console together.

The RH console looks close to the color of your cabinets. The previous console was taller, will the RH one give you the viewing height for your TV?

Keep the table and chairs, but build window seats to create a great place to hang out, have a cup of coffee, have breakfast, lunch, dinner.

shirlipp - The existing console is from our old dining room. It is kind of high when you are sitting on the couch but doable. Its a great height for watching when standing in the kitchen or sitting in the breakfast nook because you can see it above the couch. Its 42" high with a 75" tv on top. The RH is lower at 33 1/2" but if its too low the tv can be wall mounted. Its already wired there for that. Also I'm looking for a lower backed more modern sectional.

housegal - I had thought about the built-in window seat. The space is perfectly laid out for it, but I decided against it because I'm not sure its modern enough and because I didn't want something that permanent. Thanks for the pictures.

I always think wishbone chairs look great with everything. I’d go with a live edge table and 6-8 wishbone chairs.

I thought the first table above would work with the RH console, but stumped about the chairs. I'm replacing the chairs in the kitchen eventually too. Still looking for a sectional. Hard to buy online because you can't test the comfort level.

I suggest hiring a designer, they are worth their weight in gold. Just like the pros on this site, however when you hire one all their resources and knowledge are at your disposal. I for one have used designers in several of my homes and I ended up with looks, furniture and accessories I loved but would never had known about or considered without a designer.

One will get to know what you like and your vision, that is what is needed here for your work in progress.
