refinish furniture

Any suggestions for refinishing or painting this cabinet with 10 drawers. It probably has many layers of old refinishing attempts, and the top and sides have different finishes. I like quirky, unusably pieces and am willing to try my hand at painting or refinishing, even though I am a novice. Thanks!

Consider wallpapering or decoupage the cabinet and change the knobs. It is really a cool look using wild colors even fabric works!

Where are you using this piece? Function?
Black with mirrors on each drawer would be dramatic! "Crystal" drawer pulls.
Or it could go "childish" - drawers different colors, or paint drawers with chalkboard paint, put pulls at top of each drawer and you can play tic tac toe. Keep chalk in bottom drawer!
As an accent piece just one fun color with cool pulls!
