Entryway styling

Need some help styling my entryway console table.

Other additions I was thinking is Should there be a small bench somewhere in this setup? I just don’t know where to put or if there is even room.

The leaning shelf needs to go somewhere else I just don’t know where yet or get rid of. I like it because it can display pictures but I would like to find a way to better display them and not sure how or where.

What orientation should I be looking for in artwork? Should I do a grid of 4 prints or 1 single larger?

Will it look ok to have the mirror on the coat rack wall, should it be hung vertical or horizontal?
As to displaying your pictures do you have a hallway?.....I like personal pics in matted and matching frames in a horizontal row....this makes them look less like snapshots and easier to view close up...at eye level....gives the hallway a gallery feel
  • 8 years ago
As to the art and the light switches...perhaps two pieces of art ....tall and narrow...one on each side of switch ....would allow you to bring it down closer to the console table and eye level...I would also eliminate the key rack...and put a cute bowl on the table for keys....as it is.....it creates a sort of imbalance and distraction

This is a small hallway to the master. I could put some shallow ledges under the wall with that light fixture. I have a handful of collectibles I would like to display as well.

That would be done after the leaning shelf is gone.

    Would I do 2 or 3 rows?

The matching framed pictures on the little shelf are an example of the framing I suggested...keeping it simple ...repeating the frames..hung in a simple row or two .....all lend to a more chic ....clean .....professional presentation....

The collectibles may display better on the ladder in a location where it won’t crowd the hallway....

Yes, you need a long bench on the coat rack wall. Guests need a place to put down handbags or take off boots when they arrive. A wonderful looking bench is good for that.

No room on that wall for a bench

Late to the party, but IMO, leaning/ladder shelves are so collegiate. Unless your a new grad, it should go - no dorm room decor, please, unless its a sentimental piece. Since you have light switches on that wall, opt for a bench. Clean out the closet and remove the coat hooks so you can hang the mirror there (centered 5' above the floor.) If it still feels vacant, add those baskets you had on the ladder shelf under the bench to catch shoes. Place a live plant by the window where there looks to be pretty good light.

Leaner shelf is going but need a place for pictures a handful of collectibles, thinking of a ledge shelf for pics in last set of pictures
  • 8 years ago

Put the photos in matching black frames (Ikea is well priced) on one wall in the hall leading to the master. No ledges, since they encroach into the space.

Notice the wide white mats to give the photos breathing room and importance. Your frames can be a little smaller but not too small that they become clutter.

Don't buy any more accessories. You can shop from the pretty things you have to use in different places.

Do you ever leave the house through your garage or laundry room? I put a similar hook in there to hold my children's daily coats and backpacks.

Handle every changing family photos on a photo ledge.

You have a habit of hanging everything too high. Your wall decor should relate to the furnishings, and unless the object is very tall should not extend above your door frames.

You don't need to display all you own or even treasure. You lose a tree in the forest that way.

Design is like getting dressed. Put it on and the rip some off ! More doesn't make better or more style or more cozy. It makes more clutter, unless a curated collection of similar things. Very curated!!!

Stay out of Hone Goods. I can tell you love it. Give it up for six months:)

Shelf and items on it will go somewhere else. Console cleared, newer pics are in the thread.

I will try mirror horizontal where hooks are and look for some art over console. I have a feeling the switches are going to still be a problem. If you have suggestions for art over console please send my way.

Here is an inspiration I like, but not sure that will work given my lovely light switch smack dab in the middle

tqtqtbw thank you for the photo pic, I like how those are laid out in the large mats for the photo wall. We don't really go through our garage ever and our laundry is a pass through from the garage with not any room sadly. One day we will take back the garage :)

The reason I suggested the bench, rather than the console, was to avoid the switch issue. A nice upholstered piece with room underneath for 2-3 deep baskets will not require anything above it. Then hang the mirror vertically opposite. I only prefer mirrors horizontally when they are above furniture that is wide; then they need to balance by being horizontal. Have you tried the console as a larger bar table in place of the little folding one in your pix?

What idiot builder put light switches in the middle of a wall!?
I would have to have them moved if this were my home, and while you're at it have an outlet installed. Maybe move your candle display to a bedroom? Doesn't go in your foyer.
Would suggest painting the front door black and also the trim around window.

For coat hooks wall - Please remove the coat hooks for a more stylish entry. Hang your mirror vertically on that wall, with the middle of mirror about 5 feet from floor, but at least as high to reflect the top of your head. And make sure mirror isn’t behind the door when the door is wide open. Nothing under the mirror because your hall isn’t wide enough.

Try moving your entry table further down the hall, away from the front door so the light switches aren’t centered over it. That may give you more wall space for art above the table.

For size of art (either 1 piece or a set) over the entry table, the middle of it should be about 5 feet from the floor and the bottom about 6-8 inches above the table, and the top about as high as the top of the mirror, and the width about 75% as wide as the table.

Would this artwork go? I wasn’t sure if it matched the rug or not. Art is It’s 30”x 30”.
    The console is 40”

What does moving an outlet entail? I know an electrician, but do you they have to cut out the whole half wall of drywall or just a section? Does it require a full wall re-texture etc.? or just a portion?

An electrician will be able to answer your question better than I can, but I think they can cut a hole where you want the outlet and fish the wires over to it. Of course you'll have to have the hole from old outlet patched and I'm not familiar with textured walls, but I think you could get away with just redoing that spot due to fact that your mirror/art will cover it anyway. I truly believe that's your best option if you want it to look right.
Sandybean thank you! I think so too.

If I moved the outlet would you then suggest keeping the mirror over it or do art?

    Thanks for all your help!
It is always nice to have a mirror at the front door...gives everyone going in and out a chance to be sure they look ok
  • 8 years ago
I am trying to talk hubby into getting it moved and maybe an outlet down below

Trying to find some art but not sure what orientation I should be looking for where hooks are. Horizontal or vertical?
The switches will work better if moved to the side...away from the center of the wall...same height but...off to the right or left

What is in the middle of the wall where the coat rack is? Is that a door stop? If so, I would remove that and put one on the baseboard or on a door hinge and use the entire wall for a large piece of art. So I would say go with something more horizontal.
    tbchic thanked Sandybean
Looking for some feedback for set orientation on coat hook wall. Should I get large piece horizontal centered on wall and have door stop at bottom so when door is opened part will be behind the door?

Or should I get vertical to go in space where door would not open into?

I want to order art but want to make sure it’s the right size/orientation

Thanks for any ideas I have

I still like hanging your mirror vertically on coat hook wall so you can see yourself before you go out the door, with nothing placed under mirror. And hanging small pieces of artwork (maybe your framed photos along hall to BR) grouped on light switch wall so they reflect into mirror.

While I am waiting for outlets to be moved, so I can move mirror down I am playing around with the bench idea to take place of the tray table wall.

Should I go with this bench? It looks unique with the arms. It is photoshopped FYI. The plant is not which is why it is still there, but would be gone in real life.

A table at the door is much more functional than a bench....

That is a very formal European bench which doesn't work with your style.

To put shoes on wait for people before we leave and maybe extra seating at dining area if needed
  • 8 years ago
This is the right living area to the right of the entry way not sure if that changes the style. The entry might not match the style of this room. Hmm
  • 8 years ago

Your thought to use the bench for putting on shoes is why I suggested one for the entry instead of the console table with the mirror opposite. That saves moving the switch. I would want the table where you're trying the bench. It would make a lovely bar area with a tray, bottles and glassware. If you want the bench to work as additional dining seating, measure the height of your chair seats and try to get one about that high or only the tall people will be comfortable on it at the table.

With my living room decor in mind would either of these benches go? The last I really like with the pillow top but it is too long and out of my budget and probably doesn’t go.

They all have turned legs like your foyer table which I don't think works with your lovely living room style. They tend to either French antique look or a country look, and neither of those is your living room. You look to be eclectic, but you can't throw in yet another style. Stick closer to what you already have. Not sure this blue is like your chairs, but it would be nice to pull that accent color across the space. The bottom one also has storage if that is helpful. What size and budget for this?

Thanks for sticking with me Decorenthusiaste :)

The blue chairs really don't go there, but they are there until I move them to another bedroom. I have the matching couch that needs to go there, but I am using it in another room at the moment. So at some point it will be double cream sofas facing each other.

I was hoping for a somewhat dainty bench no longer than 48" or deeper than 18". I like the styles of Studio McGee, Sita Montgomery andDesignshopinteriors, but am thinking maybe my current items do not go with that style. Maybe something with wood and upholstery?

I would say budget for a bench tops $350, but if it wows me maybe more not over 500?

Clear out everything except the console table. Hang the mirror at face high...it looks like it may be hat high. Bring back something for below the table, something for ON the table and hang a piece of art across from the mirror. If you need a basket or dish for keys or something small, add one. Center the rug on the floor/doorway.

I think either of those are fine style wise, but you might want a bench that is as small as possible in depth, your hallway doesn't seem very wide. Be sure to measure how far out the bench would be before ordering.
    last modified: 8 years ago

Thanks Sandy - I definitely will tape out some measurements and I have a placeholder bench to get an idea too. It looks so bare with nothing.

I am wondering if the Ballards Hannah Fretwork has too much gemotrics going on?

This one is another style, but not sure if it looks cheap? OR maybe it's too solid so it might look heavy on that area.

I will play in photoshop with all of these a little more.

I think this brings to mind a concept that you need some empty spaces....to allow the best things in the room to shine...to allow the eyes to rest between featured parts of the room....and lastly to avoid a cluttered space where everything competes for attention...
