I like these colours I have some browns in the house the other side so would like something that will complete also

That table is too small to have five chairs around it, and it wasn't meant to go with chairs like that. I would plan on investing in a proper dining room table and wait to pick out an area rug until you get that issue fixed.

Lisa, you're going to need a carpet in the living area too, and the carpets should complement each other so you should probably choose both at the same time. Since there is no separation between the two spaces, we need to treat both at once, so can you give us a photo of the other side of the sofa, too. I have a feeling that sectional needs to be pulled out of the corner and centered on its wall.

unfortunately I am not looking at changing the table anytime soon so I have to work with what I have right now and the table is a 6 seater maybe choice of chairs is not right but for now so do and need to create a space that will work with these in mind

IMO if the table has to stay where it is you have no space for a rug under it , way too close to the step which BTW id going to add its own problems IMO.

I like the rug you show above very much. It and your chairs seem to have a bit of a pink undertone. Here's a piece of art that would look great with it.

    And a plain gold pendant...

Evenly, where can I find the art you posted....reminds me of “The Flying Nun” tv show.

i would leave it bare with no carpet. it is too close to steps and the floor ads to the touch

also you said you are in africa, what country? some places are more arrid and hot and you might like the cool feel to the floor anyhow

also take a picyure of all sides of the dining room. your table looks like it is wayyy too close to the kitchen entry. push it back more into the middle or end of the room a tad bit to give space
it looks like theres not enouvh space to walk around

Am in South Africa and it's not that too hot at all...the other side of the table is the couch and the other area I have a big old dinning table that needs to go....will post pics
  • 8 years ago
another question is the size of rug ok or too big? As I think area needs rug otherwise looks plain I must say.On wall art,I wanted to do family pics would this work or I need art?
the other side.....excuse mess....ps this is an old dinning table that is too big meaning this space needs something eventually was thinking consol table

If you put a console on the elephant wall, hang the elephant somewhere else, maybe on the dining room wall with nothing underneath it. If you leave it where it is and simply replace the big dining table with a small console, the elephant will completely overwhelm the table.

I don’t often (ever!) disagree with Grover, but I quite like the elephant over that console. About the rug under the table....can you orient it the other way?....fringe at the kitchen step end? Also, if you can ooch the table over maybe even 8-12 inches away from step, it will look more balanced.

Accessorize with what you have or buy new---we're not trying to reinvent the wheel at this point. Make it livable and attractive. First paintings were very attractive and rugs not unlivable (an animal print would be interesting.). Move furniture around and place a big sculpture on DR table or abstract arrangement. Enjoy for awhile. Remember Rome wasn't built in a day either.

OldGrayMare , My understanding is that what’s under the elephant in the picture now is the OLD dining table which is leaving .Lisa wants to get a new , smaller console , so I think groveraxle was taking that into account with the “ elephant in the room “ situation , with which I concur ,if that’s the case.

A large console table under the elephant art work would be great. I like the rug in your space. I don't think the size of the table tot he chairs is inaccurate. The dining room needs a nice contemporary light hanging from the ceiling. As far as art work for the dining room I think you should be able to find something made locally in Jo'burg. A vertical piece like Groveraxle suggested would be great.

Lisa Malopa , I think the pinkish undertones rug you tried is really pretty . However , if using that , I think you really need to pull some of that color into your sofa area for cohesion , since it appears to be all open to one another ( even though defined by columns and a ceiling beam ) . I am having a hard time visualizing how the dining and seating area are oriented . Is it possible to take a picture that encompasses both ? I love the shape of the lighting fixture groveraxle placed above the table !

Thanks all....the rug herein I have not bought yet just tried a few to see how it would work....the fridge next to step is not always there was just moving things around at the time...I will try move the chairs as suggested and also take pic of whole room.....I agree Rome was not built in a day I just want a space thus livable for now but at same time makes sense as the floor plan is rather a challenge in it self
