Living room help!

last modified: 4 years ago

I posted about this room before but I've been having hard time finding things I like. This is the room you walk into when you enter the house, so endures a lot of traffic. Although I would love a rug, I have little kids and i find keeping a rug clean with all the traffic impossible. I would love to incorporate some blue in here. For now, I am looking for a better sized coffee table. Originally planned on doing gold and white, but nothing I find matches the other furniture in the room. Do I go with cream? White? looking for something that's easy to wipe down ( fabric ones and baby spit up don't work to well) Also, would a gold mirror brighten things up? would love some not pricey suggestions! Thanks! (Ignore the nasty blue table cloth In the background)

Hi all! I’m loving my new frames- I am so happy that I did the 9!

I am now working on art for the wall between the study and the patio door. As I already have the large art over the couch and the gallery wall, I do feel I need to stick with something more simple. I found this piece- from the same artist as the piece over the couch. I know there is no green, but I do think the browns and muted blues are the same as the other piece and can work. Am I wrong? There is symbolism behind the piece (for me) that strongly connects with the piece above the couch, so in my mind… it works! Thoughts?

That looks very nice and very interesting they go well together!

I feel it will go nicely as it creates a theme of your heritage.

That should work quite well, and they’re by the same artist? Stylistically that will pull them together. I wouldn’t worry about being too Machi Machi in terms of Colour.

Thanks all! Yes, they are by the same artist. That was actually one of my hesitations as I love having pieces from a variety of artists and have never repeated yet! But, while I don’t want “matchy matchy”, I do want them to blend and this seemed to work best

And glschisler, that was one of my many thoughts when choosing this piece. Will tape it out. Assuming a 20x30 or 30x40 works?

The artist just let me know that she does not recommend printing it larger than 20x30 based on the original print size. This is one piece in a set of two, but I felt that one large piece would be better than two with the gallery wall on the other wall. Hoping this won’t feel too small. Will tape it out as soon as I find the tale

This is 22x32 (including the entire piece of tape and 1” of frame). Is this too small? I definitely can’t do both pieces in the set, but I don’t care as I really like one better. The artist is willing to print me one in this size but feels she can’t go bigger. Honest thoughts please?

I would put your larger piece on the patio door wall and the new smaller piece above the couch. Better balance maybe? Room is looking great!

    The taping is good.

I’m thinking 24x36 is the more appropriate size :(

Thanks Lisa! I really like that this piece is the “star” of the room so would prefer to keep it here

Hi there bncaew! Room is looking fantastic. I think that size looks great, because you have the large one over the sofa so you probably don’t want to go too big and that’s not too small there. You could add a 2 inch frame actually perhaps and get the size you’re looking for? Or split the difference and just do one and a half inch on the frame. I was going to suggest using a mat that could make it a little bit larger, but really that’s gonna look great.

Hello everybody! 👋 I feel like I'm walking into Cheers, lol. I wouldn't go any bigger; doing so might create competing focal points. This painting should complement the larger one, not compete with it. Personally, I'd skip the matting and just use the same gold frame as the big piece. Of course, this is just my opinion. I love the paintings! 💙

Gosh - this painting and the yet to select pillows(LOL) and you will be done with this room.

Thanks all! (Shirlpp, I laughed from you!). To clarify, the tape includes a 1” frame. I was planning on framing like the one over the couch, but I could mat and do a glass instead.

I think that size, including frame, looks fine!

Thanks all! I am going to go ahead with it. I will order it flat, not on a canvas, in case I do feel it is too small. I really appreciate the help!

Would you have it dry-mounted? I like doing that before shipping in order to avoid permanent wrinkle. (That happened once, after shipping and on the way to the framer...and I couldn't use the print. 😞)

Very nice selection! I'd be interested in the story or connection if you'd like to share it.

Have you tried putting the chairs facing the sofa to make a cozy conversation area? I would take the faux tree out of the corner and place it between the windows.

    The childern play there.

Do you think there are still children playing there..this many years later?

This comment made me laugh btydrvn :) yes, thank G-d, there are still children playing there! (I hope there always are ❤️) but, I thankfully have had two kids since starting this thread. Although I tend to like things “just so”, I hope that my house can always be kid-friendly and open.

I am going to keep the layout as is, but I appreciate the comment Amanda. I’ve just tried so many options and really want open space for tea parties and puzzles and the what not that happens here (before I clean up to take pictures!).
Dsimber, the painting above the couch is of the temple that will be rebuilt when the messiah comes. We believe that there will be only peace and joy during that time. No war, no sickness, etc. The singer playing the violin represents that joy to me- especially as music is a big thing in my home. My kids love music, and while no one is really talented in any way :)-we are always singing. Further, i appreciate the visible religious garb as it represents (to me) pride in who we are- something I want my children to be reminded of constantly.

For anyone as visual as I am, I taped it out. This is the size with a 1” frame. I may try to go larger in the frame, but I know it can’t get much larger than 1”. I think it’s an ok size.

    One more.

I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ seems like it could be a little bigger? I’ll let other people send in their thoughts. Would there by any chance be a pairing to go with that fiddler? I had mentioned using a mat with it to enlarge it just a little bit, but I’m not sure if that would look good because you’re large art is not matted. Although your family photos are. I’m just thinking out loud here. 😊

And I’m thinking to hang it just a little bit lower?

Another thought I would mention is, if you could paint your register vent and perhaps get outlet covers that are not so white, could help that Wall out a little bit as well.

Alice, you’re speaking my exact thoughts. There is an other one and I can post a picture. But will two be too much? Especially with a gallery wall of 9 on the other wall?

I’m thinking back when I did my gallery wall and asked Google about an adjacent wall and it suggested a single is fine or two. I’m thinking with your large art above your sofa then two there that are vertical perhaps the same size but not larger would look great. Especially if they are compatible pieces of art. You may could even go a bit smaller with the two pieces, perhaps not in height, but width.

I would love to see the other piece.

Here it is! Thanks for your help!

The artist has been a pleasure to work with. I’m sure I can ask her to crop a little of width and keep the height if that’s what’s recommended. I can also only do a half inch frame, keeping each piece to 21x31

Love those! Yes for door wall wall.

Thanks Flo! Do you think I should do one or two? I have a 9 frame gallery on one wall in this room and the large art over the sofa. One seems a bit small, but two seems like a lot. Above is a picture with one taped off.

Love love love the pair and they’re facing each other, which is so appropriate in the scheme of things.

OMG! How can you not use both now! Love them together. Yes, I agree, they need to be moved down. The size should be fine b/c there are two instead of one. If you wanted to use a narrower frame, that would work too. Tape out two to see how you like it. ...and move down. The large painting is higher b/c it is over the sofa. These paintings/prints do not need to be high or match the height of the larger piece.

Ok! I will tape them out! Ty all for the help!

Ok! Obviously placement here is poor! (Can you tell I’m short and was struggling? :)) The thinner one is 19”x31”, so assuming the artist can print in an 18”x30” and I would frame with a half inch frame. The wider on is 22” x32”so the standard 20x30 print and a 1” frame. I think two of either can work. Which do you prefer?

I could also do a half inch frame on the larger print, instead of the one inch I have measured out, to make it a smidge smaller, for some reason I find myself favoring the larger one. If it can work, I could definitely do the smaller frame

I will definitely lower in real life.

The one on left size & framed with lowering on wall.

I really like them larger with the 1/2 “ frame. Win win!

I’m thinking they would both be fine as the left side size. You are making them both the same, correct? And they don’t need a big frame 1/2 inch would be fine. There’s such interest in the art alone and you don’t wanna take away from that with the frames. Especially if you’re using two side-by-side in my opinion.
