Gritty Mix Drying Out Too Quickly

I have some containers of gritty mix that are drying out in the first six inches of soil too quickly after a thorough drenching. Is there a recommended way to fix that?

It could be that I went too long without a watering, and now that Spring is in full gear the planters dried out. Maybe the bark became hydrophobic. Maybe a full watering ever three or four days for a while will get the bark to saturate again.

Assuming this does not fix the problem, could I possibly just add a small amount of Turface fines and hope that this filters down into the mix and helps to increase the saturation a little? What are the ways I can address this?
