This is a fairly straight forward question. If I bring a 20 amp line out from my panel - how many junction boxes can I utilize on that 20 amp line to splice my line in different directions? How many connections per junction box can be made? Im assuming that splicing wire creates resistance and successive splices contribute to a quantity resistance that is detrimental or dangerous or am I wrong? Please advise

I recommend you get professional help for this. I'm all for people developing DIY skills, but your level of knowledge about electrical is clearly basic and this could lead to a dangerous situation. When you are a beginner, it’s all too easy with electrical to think that you know what you’re doing and make serious mistakes.

Yea ok - I rewired most of everything here just fine - I’m asking specifics as to code - if you don’t want to answer the question then don’t answer - but don’t give a ridiculous answer to make yourself feel good - when DYIr’s ask me about water proofing a basement or plant material, or masonry I give an answer - I don’t offer nonsense - if I wanted your opinion about what I should do I would ask for opinions as to how to proceed as to hire someone or not - that wasn’t the question -

Okay - Since you believe you know quite a bit about wiring, I'll just answer the question.

I'm not aware of any limit for the number of junction boxes on a single 20 amp circuit. However, there are box-fill limits for each type of junction box, so you have limits on how many ways you can branch out from one box.

The one limitation you may run into is the line loss of voltage as the circuit path gets longer, but this is not a code violation. It may just cause some electrical appliances to not work properly due to low voltage. You could probably even get around that by using 10/2 wire for a 20 amp circuit, which would reduce the voltage drop when you extend the wire to its limit.

    Forever Green-

When I answer questions in these forums, it's to try to be helpful, not to make myself feel good. When it comes to matters involving personal safety, like electricity, being helpful sometimes means judging the skill level of the person. If you think you are knowledgeable about wiring, great. It's simply that the type of questions you asked suggested otherwise to me. No need to get huffy....

It’s so intuitive, noble and heroic of you to judge my skill levels in this forum as to safeguard my personal well being. I think if I can take apart a .50 cal machine gun, drive a patrol boat in a sea state of 5 , take down a 75’ oak tree working over high voltage lines and break the sound barrier with my motor cycle - I can handle wiring a 20 amp circuit in my basement without falling into imminent peril - but thanks for your concern!

If you would have first furnished your complete curriculum vitae of relevant experience, I wouldn't have made such a horrendous misjudgment. Good luck with your project....

Excuse me - this forum is not about assessing individuals capacity to successfully undergo a project hence there is nothing to be "known" about anyone asking questions. Its a forum where questions are asked and answered - period. Beyond that is misuse of the forum and the website.

On the contrary, advice is often tempered by one's judgment of the questioner's knowledge and abilities. Whether it's gardening or potentially life threatening electrical work. If I was a professional electrician (which I'm not), I'd be trying to keep people out of trouble if I could. If some of them get offended, that's generally not intentional. Wave your big gun around all you want but it's not winning you a lot of friends.

Helping people is not always about just answering the question that they asked. Pointing out things that they may not have thought of or possible 'holes' in their knowledge can be more helpful than simply answering their questions.

We have to make judgments based on very little information and sometimes it's just a feeling that you get from the question that is asked. Sometimes we're wrong, but sometimes it could possibly save someone's life or at least open up a conversation to further discuss the issues around the question.

Kudzu may not have been right with his initial comment (or he may be right, I'm not judging) but I don't feel like he said it rudely and it was coming from a place of concern. It obviously rubbed you the wrong way, but I'd suggest (in general) not responding with anger on forums because it is what trolls (which kudzu is not) actually want and it tends to cause other helpful people to consider whether they want to enter the conversation at all. So it's just shooting yourself in the foot.

Simply ignore comments you don't like. Or refute them politely.

Ok - once again . Im not here to build a cadre of won over people as new friends. Im not here to be measured in any capacity whether that be my ability to keep myself safe and or my ability to exercise optimal courtesy. Just answer questions and stick to the format. If you don't feel comfortable answering - don't answer. But don't suggest the format serves some other purpose than what it does - provide factual, technical information.

Well, you are the one asking people to help you using their free time. You should appreciate that help in whatever form it takes. We don't work for you. You aren't paying for these answers.

If you feel like telling off the people that regularly help people in a forum, you'll find that you'll get less and less answers to your questions. There aren't a ton of regulars on this forum and you've probably rubbed a few the wrong way.

I, for one, will not be responding to your posts any more.

The only 'payment' that we get from answering people's questions is the feeling that we are appreciated. I've lost that feeling. (And, yes, I realize that you don't care)

Anyone get the feeling people treat these forums like a professional advice hotline they are entitled to for free? I am noticing it more and more.

The OP can daisy chain junction boxes all day on his "20 amp line" for all I care.
