one plant=one onion. if they are planted too close together you'll end up with small onions.

Yes they need to be separated into individual plants. If you soak the root mass in some water first they are easier to pull apart. Just be gentle about it and tho some damage to the roots will be done it is minimal. If you leave them as is all you'll get is 3 small salad onions.

The real problem is depending on where you live, it is way late to be planting onions for this year. Good luck.

It was not much money to buy the plant, less the cost of one onion, but next year I will live and learn. I am not sure if I should dig them up now.

I ended up digging them up and replanting them farther away from each other. I guess they sprouted these onions from seeds. The bulbs were very small.

In SoCal I plant mine in December. It's an excellent very very easy winter veg in So Cal. Summer is for tomatoes, peppers, green beans.
