Blueberry Pruning

last modified: 8 years ago

I bought this blueberry bush in 2014 or 2015. I planted it in a pot because I live in zone 7a in Utah and our soil isn't the best for blueberries. I felt it would be easier to control the ph level of the soil and give the plant what it needed in a pot as opposed to in the ground. I covered the pot with leaves and burlap over the first one or two winters and moved it next to the house in a protected area. In 2016, I forgot to cover it and move it near the house and the following spring it had so many leaves and blossoms. I had a lot of blueberries that year. In 2017 I figured since it did so well without covering it and protecting it that I didn't need to and I left it on the patio by the lawn about 10 feet away from the house. The picture shows what it looked like this year. It had a few blossoms that turned into blueberries, but they were smaller than a pea size and ended up falling off. The branches look 'burned' from the base up to where the leaves appear. I'm wondering if I should cut all the branches back to within 6 inches of the base or so, or if that drastic of pruning will kill the plant completely. If I don't cut the branches, will they leaf out next year or are they dead? Any help would be appreciated.
