You could add a piece of differently-colored soap stone and pretend that this was an intentional design choice. I don't think you need a complicated fireproof substructure though. Wood should be sufficient. After all, wooden kitchen cabinets regularly abut kitchen stoves.

Or you could have a local metal fabricator make a stainless steel frame that matches the stainless steel on the stove. Again, you'd probably need to have some wooden support pieces.

Several of our Canadian clients have run into the same situation when replacing their range with a Lacanche. As "M" suggested, the easiest and most attractive solution could be to have a vertical filler piece to match (or contrast) with the cabinets, and cap it with a SS filler between the countertop and the range. The SS would be a nice visual continuation of the top of the range.

A local metal fabricator should be able to do this quite easily for you with the proper dimensions. Please remember to allow for a bit of space on either side of the range to facilitate installation and pulling it out when needed. The opening width for Rully should be 705mm / 27-3/4" .

Thank you, both! I assume by SS you mean stainless steel and not soapstone? That's funny because I assumed that I would try to match the countertop with a soapstone molding. But obviously stainless steel would be an easier choice. Not yet having see the stove in person, I wasn't quite sure what the top of the stove looked like. I'd never heard of a metal fabricator...will go check! Patrick: could you please comment on the safety of having wood adjacent to the Lacanche stove (either a wood spacer or cabinets)?

I knew we helped one of our clients get this exact set-up before, and I found a picture again. As you can see, the stainless steel pieces nicely fill the gap between the range, the countertops and the cabinets.

Our metal fabricator is of course in Canada, however this should help illustrate what you need when you find someone locally. If you don't, please let me know and we can coordinate with him and arrange for shipping.
