Which bed would you choose?

last modified: 7 years ago

I’m doing a guest room with 2 queen beds. I have one black iron bed that I want to use. I bought it at least 20 years ago, no clue where. So my plan is to buy a second queen iron bed with similar proportions. I’ve been all over the internet collecting likely candidates and have narrowed it down to the 5 shown. The current bed is the lower center in the collage.

I don’t think I can go wrong with any of them but would still like some outside opinions, especially if I’m overlooking a design clash or problem.

For reference, this is my proposed layout.

#1 or #4, even #2 if it works best with the budget or other constraints.

#2 is my personal favorite, but I would get #4 to coordinate with your current bed. Curves vs straight top rails.

I don't know what is wrong with me, I never see the numbers on the pictures when they are first posted. So, number 4 would be my voice, though number two is my favorite.

I like #2 with your current bed but also like #3. I think it gives a more collected traditional look and would prefer it if used on its own at a later time.

    I like 2 and 4 as well.

I like the upholstered headboard but since both beds will partially block a window I think they both need to have a similar style vis a vis solid or not.

Number 4. No to upholstered in a guest bedroom. Someone might sleep with their puppy and it could make a real MESS!

Ok I was all excited about 2 as it was on sale for $154! But then the reviews revealed that there were issues with the lack of sturdiness. So I think I’ll go with #4.

Number 4 may go on sale before Christmas. Keep your eye on it and see...

This one looks even more similar to yours with the concave shape of the headboard! I would want that headboard shape to match as much as possible. https://www.birchlane.com/furniture/pdp/bensley-panel-bed-thre4435.html?piid=17011657

I like # 4 but all of them are nice.

Since they will be next to each other on the wall, it might look nice if both beds are approximately the same height with rails the same thickness so the beds seem in proportion to each other.

That might be more important than have them look exactly alike.

    Annette Holbrook(z7a) thanked loobab

Loobab, yes that was my thought. That even if the beds aren’t a matched set it would be fine as long as the mattresses end up at a similar height and the basic dimensions are close. My existing bed is 55” tall. So I’m trying to find something as close as possible. Also, the existing bed is black, so I’m trying to stick with black.

I found a bedroom on Pinterest done by a designer that has 2 different beds. As you can see they are pretty different but the bedding is the same.

Not a fan of the above photo. If you're going for symmetry, it misses the mark--the height differential is not great.

Can you use your existing bed in another room, and get matching beds for the guest room? If not, then definitely make sure that the proportions are similar.

Annette Holbrook(z7a) thanked Diana Bier Interiors, LLC
  • 7 years ago

Diana, I agree. I like that the mattresses are at the same height, but not the difference in height of the headboards. Which is why I’m trying to find a bed that is as close to 55” tall as I can.

So I have 3 queen size beds to pick from. I’m trying to use what I have and not buy 2 new beds for that room.

Here are my other 2 queen beds.

So those being my options, I thought getting something to work with the existing iron bed would be easier.

2 was my first choice-liked it's similarity and differences.

    1 too modern

    4 too delicate

5 too different in every way

that leaves 3 which I like!

1, 2 or 4 -- because they all have posts -- the others do not.

The footboard and headboard seem to be a match, except for height. What if you attached the footboard to the wall at the same height as the headboard and then bought just the new frame and mattress.? Hey, they would match and it woould be less expensive.

This article tells you how to do it (and from what I read it is the better way).

JudyG, what a brilliant idea! I am going up to the cabin next week so will look into that possibility. There are two small issues, one is that it is a cabin with knotty pine walls and my husband is a freak about attaching stuff to the walls because it’s not like you can patch the holes later. Second, both beds will partially cover a window and my hope was to put Roman blinds on the windows and be able to lower the blinds behind the headboard if need be.

    Here is the room currently,

My crash pad when we go up to work on the cabin.

What a great place-where is it? So glad you aren't asking how to paint the pine :)

    last modified: 7 years ago

Greenfish1234, the cabin is in Cherry Log, Georgia. In the Blue Ridge mountains.

So when we first bought the cabin I was not at all excited about all the wood. IT. IS.EVERYWHERE. We had a few painters look at painting but we were told that the wood has a finish that would make painting expensive and no guarantee how it would look. So I decided to live with it. As always happens with me, what starts out as being the biggest negative has become my favorite thing. Kind of like my career as a dog trainer, the scariest or hardest dogs to train end up claiming my heart.

Funnily enough, my husband has started making noises about wanting to maybe whitewash some of the ceilings! At this point I’ve learned to love it and don’t feel like spending money on that would be a good idea. I am considering maybe doing something with the trim and beams for interest but that’s it.

Color in decor is all you need. You wouldn't want all the wood anywhere but a cabin, but there it looks great!

Annette, I don’t think the windows are a problem. Hang curtains (and I know just the ones) on a wider rod and it will make the window look bigger and the edges of the headboards will have curtain behind. Try vendors on etsy.com who make burlap curtains (very inexpensive) and have the panels trimmed in red to go with your bedding.

Or figure out a way to the the headboards together and run the bed horizontally to the wall.

    last modified: 7 years ago

JudyG, I think if I attach 2 48” 2x4s just under the windows then I can attach the headboards to the 2x4s with c clamps. But if headboards are attached to the wall then curtains would be blocked. Unless I don’t do them down to the floor? Which is why I was doing Roman blinds.

    Kind of like this.

My other option is to flip the room, but I’ve never been a fan of beds where your back is to the door. Also I lose 3 feet to maintain the walkway in which means I only have a foot between the bed and the wall which I’m not sure is enough room to comfortably access and make the bed.

Annette, I recently had my antique iron bed modified at a welding shop. I would think they could do as JudyG suggests but could make a base/legs on the foot board so it's the same height as the headboard - without having to attach anything to the wall. Just get another bed frame that allows you to attach a headboard (or have the welders rig it up so it's attached to the frame). It won't show when the mattress and boxsprings are on the bed. It was very, very inexpensive to have mine modified (I had it changed from a double to a queen size).

eta: I guess they'd have to modify the original frame with the headboard, too, so you'd have legs at the foot of the bed. Or maybe you'd have to buy two metal frames that allow headboards to be attached and have the welders attach them with the footboard (now headboard) at a height to match the original headboard.

Olychick, good ideas. Footboards take up so much space, and if space is a priority, then turning one bed into two makes a lot of sense.

Annette, adddressing your husband’s concern about putting holes in the wall, I would assume once you get the bedroom finished you won’t be moving the headboards.

While one of my favorite things about the iron bed is the fact that it has a footboard, eliminating it does give me more room.

I will look into getting the bed modified into 2 headboards, but I’m not sure I want to permanently alter it. It is actually an iron bed, not the metal tube type that is more common nowadays.

Judy, I’m guessing I won’t be moving the beds.

I wouldn't do headboards only. Carry the eclectic look of the different beds with other furniture in the room with a "collected, " not matchy, furniture. I love the direction. Some painted pieces such as in your and my inspiration photos will brighten things and give it that collected vibe.

Does you current bed have assembly holes what would line up with the holes of a simple metal mattress frame? That might work fro JudyG's idea, rather than trying to attach anything to the walls. When you start doing your wall décor, don't forget Command strips and hooks. No holes. :-)

I would make sure that the headboard and footboard on both are the same height if that matters to you. In the pictures though I’m loving #4 with your bed - love the similarity in curves.
