Thus ends this summer's project saga

This ends this summer's mis-step, when I cut and began assembling a magazine cover quilt, only to discover the arctic white and batiks didn't work together.


Combined the white with blue to make a quilt for our new grand nephew.


Ordered light beige batik. Then to find a pattern for 2 1/2" squares (had to unsew them). Copied a quilt I saw online. Backed and bound with muslin. It is 82" by 92" - way too big to do on my domestic machine - so sent it to the long-armer. Happy with the result, even though it's very simple.

      I see the whole photo on my iPad. I’ve noticed Houzz works differently on different devices. It’s kind of annoying. :)

      I clicked it to the larger pic at work, but can't post from there to say so. It came out GREAT!!!

      It may be simple Lati, but it's sooooo effective. I've never seen this pattern before & I gotta say I wanna make it already (looked at it twice already today).

      Seriously, something about the size / proportion of the blocks & rows of blocks really plays up its scrappiness, I love it.

      I used some scraps, but mostly a jelly roll. It surprised me how few patterns use those 2 1/2” strips. Of course some use the method where you sew squares to the corners then chop them off. That works well, but seems kind of wasteful.

      The pattern may be simple, but the quilt is wonderful. The light batik was the perfect choice for the large squares. Very pretty.


      Check out the free patterns on Bonnie Hunter’s website, quiltville.com. She uses lots of 2.5” strips in her patterns. I’m doing one right now called Strip Twist.

      Lois, Bonnie’s site is wonderful, and thanks to all of you, I also have three of her books. My problem was I had already chopped the strips into squares. To be honest, I couldn’t tell from the photo what size the blocks were in this pattern. But it could be made in any size.
